Job summary

City of Kerrville, Texas is hiring for a wastewater collection and reuse water systems maintenance role. The position involves repairing mains, lift stations, lines, and associated equipment, as well as manual and mechanical tasks across citywide sites.

The candidate must hold a High School Diploma or equivalent and pursue a Texas CDL and Class 1 Wastewater Collection license within specified timeframes. OSHA-type safety, field communication, and on-call work are expected.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; 1 year related field experience preferred.
  • Valid Texas CDL or obtain within one year of employment.
  • Must obtain Class 2 Wastewater Collection license within two years of the date of issuance of a Class 1 Wastewater Collection license.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair the wastewater collection system and reuse water distribution system.
  • Use tools and equipment for mechanical and physical repairs.
  • Perform chemical dosing for grease dispersion and root control.
  • Respond to calls during normal and after-hours as needed.
  • Complete and submit paperwork related to work orders.
  • Inspect and communicate with citizens while in the field.
  • Utilize CCTV to inspect wastewater manholes and lines.
  • Perform dye/smoke testing to verify service connections and system operation.
  • Perform grounds keeping and general yard maintenance duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Maintains the operations of the wastewater collection system. Perform repairs and maintenance on mains, equipment, and components in the reclaimed water distribution and wastewater collections system.This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following examples do not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent.

  1. Perform maintenance and repairs to the wastewater collection system, to include but not limited to collection lines, manholes/covers, lift- stations, and force mains.
  2. Perform maintenance and repairs to the reuse water distribution system, to include but not limited to valves, lines, and may include pumping sites.
  3. Utilize proper tools and equipment to perform mechanical and physical repairs to the wastewater collection system and the reuse distribution system.
  4. Perform chemical dosing to the wastewater collection system for grease dispersion and root control.
  5. Respond to calls/requests that occur during normal work hours and after hours.
  6. Complete and submit paperwork related to work orders.
  7. Communicate with citizens while out in the field, or responding to calls/requests.
  8. Utilize the CCTV Televising equipment to conduct inspections of wastewater manholes and collection lines for various needed repairs, new construction pre-acceptance, and general inspections.
  9. Perform dye/smoke testing to ensure that service connections are legal, and system function are normal and within regulations.
  10. Perform grounds keeping duties as assigned, to include but not limited to mowing, weed eating, trash pickup and general yard maintenance duties.

Education
Certificationand Experience Required:
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent with one year of experience in a related field is preferred
  • Possession of a valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain within one year of employment
  • Possession of a valid Class 1 Wastewater Collection license or obtain within one year of employment
  • Must obtain a Class 2 Wastewater Collection license within two years of the date of issuance of a Class 1 Wastewater Collection license
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to work a flexible work and on-call schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance
  • Ability to perform basic computer functions as required by daily responsibilities
  • Ability to understand and operate SCADA systems
Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids
  • Hand tools, power tools, , hydro-cleaner, vacuum truck, backhoe, bobcat, excavator, crane truck, sewer televising unit, dump truck, piping, and other related wastewater equipment
  • Gas detection equipment, confined space harness and lift, SCBA, hearing protection, eye protection, level A suit, safety boots, gloves, respirator, safety vest, hard hat
  • Computer and related software pertaining to administrative and operational data entry
Special Requirements
  • Operators work weekends, nights, holidays and emergencies at any time as required
  • Subject to a 24-hour on-call as required, serve on a rotation duty schedule for weekend duty and night call-outs, and are required to respond to emergency call-outs

Duties are generally performed citywide in both outdoor and indoor settings. This is medium to heavy work requiring the exertion of fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move, lift and push objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pushing and pulling. This position is subject to outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold, extreme heat, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
