Job summary

County of San Mateo is seeking qualified candidates for the Wastewater Collection Worker I/II roles to support the county’s sanitary sewer and storm drain systems. The entry-level Worker I offers on-the-job training under supervision, while Worker II provides greater independence and total duties with guidance as needed.

Qualifications

• Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations.
• Knowledge of safety practices related to public works projects.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Excellent customer service skills and communication with the public.

Responsibilities

• Perform field inspections of sanitary sewer lines.
• Read and interpret sanitary sewer system and drainage system maps.
• Calculate volume, weights, and measures.
• Work with basic arithmetic computations.
• Read and interpret engineering and construction plans and specifications.
• Perform closed-circuit television inspections of sanitary sewer lines.
• Rod and flush sanitary sewer lines as part of maintenance or to remove obstructions.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed and system changes.
• Operate pumps to remove sewage during overflows or bypass pumping.
• Cut and refinish streets, lay cement and asphalt.
• Repair and reconstruct damaged sewer lines.
• Be certified for confined space entry.
• Make minor repairs to pumps and equipment.
• Drive and monitor wastewater collection and road maintenance equipment.
• Record and respond to complaints and questions regarding issues.
• Practice safety in public works projects.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
