  • Review laboratory results, operating conditions, and process data and adjust as needed.

  • Coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance of pumps, motors, aeration systems, and related equipment.
  • Identify problems and coordinate repairs with maintenance or contractors.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and use of treatment chemicals.
  • Oversee sludge handling, dewatering, and disposal processes.
  • Conduct routine plant inspections and maintain a safe, orderly site.
  • Investigate upsets, failures, spills, and permit violations and coordinate corrective action.
  • Maintain inventory of chemicals, parts, and safety equipment.
  • Prepare reports for operations and regulatory bodies.
  • Communicate with regulators, contractors, and City management.
  • Enforce safety procedures and PPE usage.
  • Participate in emergency response, after-hours calls, and standby operations.
  • Assist with capital projects and long-term planning.

Job Overview

Responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the City’s wastewater treatment facility. Supervises plant personnel, oversees treatment operations, maintains regulatory compliance, and coordinates maintenance and emergency response activities.

Specific Tasks, Duties, & Responsibilities
  • Supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate wastewater treatment plant employees.
  • Direct daily wastewater treatment operations and monitor treatment processes, equipment, and system performance.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and permit requirements.
  • Review laboratory results, operating conditions, and treatment data and make process adjustments as needed.
  • Maintain accurate operating logs, inspection records, maintenance records, reports, and regulatory documentation.
  • Coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance of pumps, motors, blowers, valves, aeration systems, disinfection systems, controls, and related equipment.
  • Identify equipment problems and coordinate repairs with maintenance personnel or outside contractors.
  • Ensure the proper handling, storage, and use of treatment chemicals.
  • Oversee sludge handling, dewatering, disposal, and related processes.
  • Conduct routine plant inspections and ensure facilities, grounds, equipment, and treatment systems are maintained in a safe and orderly condition.
  • Investigate process upsets, equipment failures, alarms, spills, permit violations, and other operational concerns and coordinate corrective action.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels of chemicals, parts, supplies, and safety equipment.
  • Prepare operational reports, compliance documentation, and other required reports.
  • Communicate with regulatory agencies, contractors, vendors, laboratory personnel, and City management.
  • Enforce departmental safety procedures and proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Participate in emergency response, after-hours callouts, and standby operations as required.
  • Assist with capital improvement projects, equipment upgrades, facility improvements, and long-term planning.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Worker Requirements
Education, Licenses & Certifications
Required:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Louisiana driver’s license.
  • Must possess or obtain State of Louisiana Certified Waste Water Operator Level 4 (Collection & Treatment) certifications within 1 year of employment and maintain certifications throughout.
Preferred:
  • Experience managing a municipal wastewater treatment facility.
  • Experience supervising licensed wastewater operators.
  • Experience with computerized SCADA systems.
  • Experience with regulatory inspections and compliance reporting.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of municipal wastewater treatment processes, equipment, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to interpret laboratory results and operational data and make appropriate treatment adjustments.
  • Ability to supervise, train, evaluate, and direct employees.
  • Ability to identify operational and equipment problems and determine appropriate corrective action.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare required reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, management, regulatory agencies, contractors, and vendors.
  • Ability to respond effectively to emergencies and changing operational conditions.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to perform moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, climbing, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
  • Ability to work around wastewater, treatment chemicals, mechanical equipment, noise, odors, and other operational hazards while using required protective equipment.
Hours/Scheduling
  • Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • May be required to fill in for other shifts based on operational needs.
  • Participates in a scheduled after-hours on-call rotation.
  • Overtime or after-hours work may be required based on operational or emergency needs.
