Job summary

The City of Deltona is hiring for a Wastewater Operator (Trainee) at Deltona Water. This regular full-time, non-exempt role offers structured trainee progression toward licensed operator status and hands-on experience in wastewater operations.

Starting as a Trainee with pay ranging up to licensed operator levels, you will gain hours and certifications while supporting essential infrastructure and protecting public health and the environment.

Qualifications

• Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
• Licensed Operators require one year of experience in wastewater testing, operations or closely related experience.

Responsibilities

Compensation

Trainee Anticipated Hiring Range (Depending on Qualifications):

• $21.50/hr. – Trainee I (No license, no coursework)
• $22.57/hr. – Trainee II (Coursework completed, awaiting exam)
• $23.70/hr. – Trainee III (Coursework completed, exam passed, pending hours)

Licensed Operator Anticipated Hiring Rate of Pay (Depending on Qualifications):

• $24.64/hr. – $32.04/hr. – Operator I (State of FL Class \"C\")
• $26.73/hr. – $34.76/hr. – Operator II (State of FL Class \"B\")
• $28.82/hr. – $37.48/hr. – Operator III (State of FL Class \"A\")

DEFINITION:

The purpose of this job/class within the organization is to collect and analyze water compliance samples according to state and federal laws. This job/class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Not All-inclusive)

• Monitors and operates gauges, meters, and control panels.
• Controls variations and operating conditions of the treatment process; records meter and gauge headings.
• Monitors SCADA system and sends commands via radio signal to make adjustments at wastewater plants. Operates and maintains valves, motors, pumps, and engines either manually or by remote control
• Monitors and adjusts plant operations manually or by computer.
• Cleans and maintains all aspects of the wastewater process, including headwork, filters, and tanks.
• Extracts samples and conducts routine laboratory tests
• Documents and certifies test results. Conducts change‑out of chemical containers and associated equipment as needed.
• Check chemical residuals onsite and conducts analyzer comparisons with hand‑held meters.
• Conducts scheduled plant inspections, certifying completion of such inspections in the facility check sheets and logbooks.

Ensures that plant facilities and grounds are kept clean, neat, and orderly.

Minimum Qualifications
