Job summary

City of Roanoke is seeking a Solid Waste Equipment Operator to operate automated side loader, knuckle boom and/or packer truck. The role includes serving as the primary contact with residents on solid waste, recycling and bulk/brush issues, and planning efficient routes using maps.

The candidate must possess a Class B CDL with air brake endorsement, understand city codes, and follow safety rules. This is a non-exempt, full-time position within the City of Roanoke’s Public Works department.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; 2-3 years' experience or equivalent combination.
• Requires Class B CDL with air brake endorsement.
• Ability to read maps and plan efficient routes; provide excellent customer service.

Responsibilities

• Drives and operates automated side loader, knuckle boom and/or packer truck depending on route.
• Reads maps and plans the most efficient route.
• Act as primary contact with citizens on solid waste, recycling and bulk/brush issues.
• Articulates city policy/code requirements to citizens in a tactful manner.
• Abates hydraulic spills and follows procedures for chemical reactions.
• Maintains logs and checklists; reports maintenance needs.
• Supervises 1-2 sanitation workers as needed.
