This position is located at the Walker County Environmental Health Department in Lafayette, Georgia. It is an unclassified, full-time position working 40 hours per week.
Salary Range:
- EH1 - $48,062.40
- EH2 - $52,348.56
- EH3 - $57,063.60
- EH4 - $62,770.08
Job Responsibilities
- Assists with preparation of sampling plans and collects samples in accordance with established procedures.
- Conducts on‑site inspections at assigned facilities to determine compliance with environmental health codes.
- Performs follow‑up inspections to monitor correction of non‑compliance deficiencies.
- Informs facility officials of inspection results and any corrective measures needed for achieving compliance in a timely manner.
- Conducts investigations into possible causes of illnesses, completing applicable reports in a timely manner.
- Calibrates equipment as necessary.
- Notifies supervisor immediately when imminent health hazards are found.
- Interprets regulatory issues, technical issues, and analytical data to document compliance.
- Reviews permit applications; drafts, modifies, and issues permits in accordance with established procedures.
- Reviews field implementation of plans to ensure compliance with environmental health laws, rules, and regulations.
- Assists in the completion of permit applications and other correspondence as needed.
- Conducts field evaluations according to established procedures.
- Investigates complaints, provides environmental education and technical assistance.
- Responds to complaints and requests for service from the public in a professional, courteous, and timely manner.
- Notifies complainants of investigation results in a timely manner.
- Refers individuals to appropriate agencies or resources for problem solutions.
- Initiates appropriate enforcement action to bring non‑compliance facilities into compliance expeditiously.
- Participates in negotiations with the regulated community to resolve non‑compliance issues.
- Monitors progress of compliance schedules, maintains accurate status records, and initiates enforcement actions as the situation requires.
- Provides factual testimony in formal legal proceedings and supports the legal community.
- Plans and conducts facility audits and inspections.
- Conducts public health educational activities at schools, facilities, and professional association meetings.
- Participates in public hearings and meetings, providing technical expertise regarding environmental health issues.
- Provides ongoing consultation to the public, regulated community, and enforcement personnel regarding environmental health codes.
- Assists in the administration and coordination of certification programs.
- Assists with the revision of environmental health rules and regulations.
- Responds to environmental health emergencies and conducts safety evaluations.
- Evaluates environmental health and safety risks at controlled and uncontrolled sites.
- Maintains 24‑hour capability to respond to environmental health emergencies.
- Maintains and performs timely updates to emergency response plans.
- Utilizes assessment models to determine potential risk and makes protective action recommendations.
- Reports and documents exposures to hazardous and unsafe conditions immediately.
- Provides information to the public, regulated community, and enforcement officers regarding environmental laws and regulations.
- Assists with data collection and evaluation.
- Performs injury prevention activities in accordance with acceptable health and safety practices.
- Monitors and assesses progress and acceptability of programs.
- Completes required forms and reports according to local protocols and standards of promptness.
- Manages equipment and supply inventories for monitoring and analytical procedures.
- Generates periodic statistical reports used to evaluate program effectiveness.
- Prepares and issues compliance letters and general correspondence.
- Partakes in unit, agency, and state meetings to maintain knowledge of environmental health programs.
- Reads, interprets, communicates, and applies information from policy directives.
- Evaluates professional literature to maintain current knowledge of environmental health issues.
- Incorporates knowledge of new trends and developments into performance of responsibilities.
- Participates in professional development training to stay current with technologies and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, including completion of 27 semester or 40 quarter hours in laboratory sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics).
