About ScribeUp
ScribeUp is a Series A embedded fintech building AI-powered subscription and recurring bill management infrastructure for financial institutions.
In roughly 18 months, ScribeUp has grown from zero to 60+ signed financial institutions. The company recently raised a $10M Series A to accelerate the next stage of growth across Product, Engineering and Go-to-Market.
ScribeUp's technology sits directly inside financial-institution experiences and helps consumers understand and take action on their recurring financial lives.
ScribeUp is building teams in New York City and Los Angeles and operates in a highly collaborative environment.
The Role
ScribeUp is hiring a VP of Engineering to lead delivery across the engineering organization and to drive the execution of the CTO's technical direction.
The CTO and co-founder is responsible for setting technical direction, including new capabilities, tooling investments, architecture decisions and efficiency programs. The VP of Engineering is responsible for converting that direction into staffed, scheduled and managed work, and for carrying it through to delivery.
This position carries direct operational responsibility for sprint execution, timelines, on-call health, cross-team dependencies and the day-to-day management of engineering team leads across four teams. Team leads will report to the VP of Engineering as each is hired; until then, they report to the CTO, and the VP of Engineering will support those searches.
What You'll Own
Delivery across the engineering organization
- Sprint planning, estimation discipline and timelines that the rest of the company can plan against.
- Management of cross-team dependencies, sequencing work so that one team's output is available when another team requires it.
- On-call health, including sustainable rotations, clear escalation paths and a declining incident load over time.
- A delivery cadence in which commitments made to clients and to Go-to-Market are met, and in which risk of slippage is raised early.
Execution of the CTO's technical direction
- Translate technical direction, including new capabilities, tooling investments and efficiency programs, into scoped, staffed and scheduled workstreams.
- Carry those workstreams through delivery, including resourcing decisions, tradeoff calls and removal of blockers.
- Report progress to the CTO and CEO with sufficient fidelity that leadership understands what is on track, what is at risk and what would be required to accelerate a given initiative.
Management of the engineering organization
- Day-to-day management of team leads, including goal-setting, performance management, coaching and professional development.
- Hiring, in partnership with the CTO, to close open team-lead searches, followed by ownership of hiring plans within each team.
- Engineering operations, including the processes, rituals and tooling that allow a multi-team organization to move quickly without unnecessary overhead.
The Teams You'll Run
- Integrations & Delivery: accelerate financial-institution integrations, make them revenue-generating and move them toward self-service.
- Agentic Execution (Iris): ScribeUp's AI action layer. Expand coverage, improve accuracy and grow the set of supported actions members can take on their bills.
- Platform: data accuracy, client feature requests and exploration of what ScribeUp's data makes possible. Product works most closely with this team. Product owns demand (member behaviors, client asks and prioritization); Platform owns feasibility and the build.
- Infrastructure / DevOps / Compliance: ensure ScribeUp identifies issues first, recovers quickly, maintains continuous compliance and keeps infrastructure costs controlled.
What Good Looks Like
- Every team ships on a predictable cadence, and the company trusts engineering dates.
- The CTO's initiatives move from direction to production without requiring the CTO to manage their delivery.
- Cross-team dependencies are planned and sequenced rather than discovered.
- On-call is sustainable, incidents are rare and recovery is fast when they occur.
- Team leads are hired, onboarded and operating their teams with increasing autonomy.
What We're Looking For
- 3+ years of experience managing software engineers, including experience managing managers or team leads.
- A demonstrated record of making delivery predictable within an engineering organization.
- The ability to convert ambiguous direction into scoped, sequenced and staffed work.
- Experience operating as a senior execution partner to a technical founder or CTO, with high ownership of delivery.
- Sufficient technical depth to pressure-test estimates, evaluate architecture tradeoffs and assess risk credibly with senior engineers.
- Experience at startups or on small teams where process had to be established rather than inherited.
Nice to Have
- Experience in fintech, banking technology or other regulated environments (SOC 2, PCI).
- Experience leading teams that build integrations, data platforms or AI and agentic systems.
- Experience scaling an engineering organization through the Series A to Series B stage.
Why This Role Matters
ScribeUp's engineering organization is scaling from founder-led to team-led. The technical direction is set and demand is established, with 60+ signed financial institutions depending on what engineering ships next. The VP of Engineering is the leader who makes delivery predictable and multiplies the CTO's output across the organization.
