Job summary

Boston Medical Center is seeking a Volunteer Services Program Manager to lead recruitment, onboarding and engagement for volunteers across BMCHS locations. This role reports to the Director of Volunteer Services and supports staffing, policy, and program development.

The manager will oversee scheduling, background checks, training, and data dashboards, while developing a robust volunteer handbook and ensuring high satisfaction across programs, including the Junior Summer Volunteer Program.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of best practices in volunteer coordination.
  • Recruiting, screening, and training experience.

Responsibilities

  • Works with department heads to assess volunteer needs for BMCHS activities across locations.
  • Manages all aspects of volunteer engagement in the Workday System.
  • Schedules volunteers via Vsys and other systems; coordinates shifts.
  • Assists in recruiting volunteers through local media, web, social media and outreach.
  • Develops and updates the volunteer handbook with policies and guidelines.
  • Coordinates scheduling of volunteers into shifts based on needs and priorities.
  • Keeps volunteers informed through orientation, meetings, newsletters and emails.
  • Ensures background checks and Occupational Health clearance.
  • Facilitates ID badges and training in their service areas.
  • Manages Volunteer Services KPIs and biannual satisfaction surveys.
  • Recruits and manages department volunteers; oversees Junior Summer Volunteer Program.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Works with department heads to conduct a comprehensive volunteer needs assessment for BMCHS activities at all BMCHS locations
  • Manages all aspects of volunteer engagement in the Workday System
  • Manages volunteer availability, engagement and scheduling through Vsys, the volunteer management software system;
  • Assists in recruiting volunteers through local media, web, social media and outreach in partnership with Marketing and Communications
  • Develops/reviews/updates volunteer handbook for internal use that provides policy, information and guidelines for staff and volunteers;
  • Assists departments with scheduling volunteers into shift work for BMC activities, based on departmental needs and organizational priorities;
  • Works to keep volunteers properly informed about the BMC and their duties, through orientation meetings, group sessions, newsletters, emails and phone calls;
  • Ensures proper background checks are performed
  • Ensures compliance and clearance with Occupational Health;
  • Facilitates ID badges for volunteers;
  • Works with appropriate staff to ensure volunteers are properly trained in their area of service;
  • Manages quantitative data for Volunteer Services Dashboard (KPIs);
  • Conducts biannual Volunteer Satisfaction surveys;
  • Recruit and manage Volunteer Services department volunteers
  • Oversee the Junior Summer Volunteer Program
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Education
JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of best practices in volunteer coordination.
  • Recruiting, screening, and training experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required
  • Certification in Volunteer Management desirable
Experience
  • Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative work environment and promoting teamwork.
  • Minimum 3 years of program coordination and project management experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of working with the public in formal and informal settings.
Compensation Range

$66,000.00- $96,000.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness. This range is based on Boston-area data, and is subject to modification based on geographic location.
