Job summary

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) is seeking a highly organized Volunteer Coordinator to lead our volunteer services program in Birmingham, AL. The role manages recruitment, training, scheduling, and engagement of volunteers across GBHS events and shelter operations.

You will design, implement, and continuously improve the program, align staffing with operational needs, and collaborate with staff to ensure a positive volunteer experience and mission impact.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of experience in volunteer management, event coordination, or related field preferred.
• Experience coordinating events and managing volunteer or workforce scheduling preferred.
• Certification in Volunteer Management or related field is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and improve a best-practice volunteer program aligned with GBHS’ mission.
• Develop and maintain volunteer service descriptions and staffing plans.
• Assess organizational needs and deploy volunteers to support operations.
• Establish program goals, metrics, and evaluation processes.
• Develop and execute recruitment strategies to attract diverse and skilled volunteers.
• Plan, schedule, and coordinate volunteer staffing for all GBHS events.
