Join the City of Orange as a Fire Prevention Reserve Volunteer. This is a unique opportunity for community members to gain professional development experience while supporting fire prevention efforts. Volunteers assist with inspections, public education, and various special projects, making a difference in community safety. Participants must commit to training and regular hours, focusing on civic and humanitarian growth.
The Orange City Fire Department's Prevention Reserve Program is a volunteer-based, professional development, and career preparation program. This program offers community members the opportunity to support full-time Fire Prevention staff in delivering fire prevention, public education, and community service, as well as assisting with special projects and tasks.
Fire Prevention Reserve Volunteers donate their time for civic, humanitarian, and professional growth reasons. They perform fire and life safety inspections in non-complex facilities to ensure compliance with laws, codes, and ordinances. They also assist Fire Safety Specialists with inspections for special events and participate in public education activities and events.
Under the guidance of a Fire Safety Specialist or Hazardous Materials Specialist, volunteers respond to complaints or referrals regarding fire and life safety hazards or code violations. They are responsible for maintaining the fire prevention office, equipment, resources, materials, and assigned vehicles. Volunteers operate department vehicles safely and maintain their uniforms and safety equipment in a ready and professional condition.
Participation in all assigned training sessions is required. Volunteers may attend fire prevention association meetings at the discretion of the program coordinator and assist with the annual Spark of Love toy drive. They may also be assigned to support prevention, training, or administrative staff as needed and perform other related duties.
Minimum qualifications include being at least 18 years old at the time of application, having completed or enrolled in fire-related courses, possessing a valid California Class C Driver License with insurance and a satisfactory driving record, and passing a background check and medical exam. Volunteers must commit to at least seven hours per week during operating hours (Monday - Thursday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm).
The selection process involves application screening, an interview, a background investigation, and a medical exam, including drug and alcohol testing. The initial medical exam costs are paid by the City of Orange.
