Job summary

The Dawes Arboretum is seeking a full-time Volunteer Coordinator to develop and sustain a robust volunteer program. You will recruit, train, schedule, and support volunteers across all departments, ensuring meaningful experiences that align with our mission.

Ideal candidates have an Associate's degree and at least one year of volunteer engagement or project coordination experience, plus strong communication and organizational skills. Evening/weekend availability may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage the volunteer program, including recruitment, training, onboarding, assignment, and engagement.
  • Build relationships with volunteers and lead volunteer experiences.
  • Update the Volunteer Handbook and maintain policies and best practices.
  • Coordinate background checks and orientations.
  • Track engagement and program outcomes for reporting and evaluation.
  • Support outreach to schools, civic groups, and corporations to promote the program.
  • Coordinate volunteer events and recognition celebrations.

Job description

Overview

The Dawes Arboretum is recruiting a full-time Volunteer Coordinator to join our People & Culture branch. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining a robust volunteer program that supports The Arboretum’s mission and priorities. This role will recruit, train, schedule, and support volunteers across all departments of the organization, while ensuring meaningful and engaging volunteer experiences.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee The Arboretum’s volunteer program, including budget management, volunteer recruitment, training and onboarding, volunteer assignment and management, engagement, and recognition.
  • Build and maintain relationships with volunteers by regularly visiting and engaging with them. Lead volunteer experiences when needed.
  • Update and maintain the Volunteer Handbook to reflect volunteer expectations, policies and best practices.
  • Manage the volunteer background check process.
  • Schedule and conduct regular volunteer orientations and training programs.
  • Track volunteer engagement and program outcomes, ensuring accurate data for reporting and evaluation.
  • Participate in outreach efforts to schools, civic groups and corporations, as needed, to promote The Arboretum’s volunteer program.
  • Coordinate all volunteer special events, recognition and appreciation celebrations.
Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in business administration, communications, human resources, natural resources, education, or related field; or a combination of education and experience.
  • One (1) year of demonstrated experience in volunteer engagement, program coordination, or project management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Previous experience with VolunteerHub is a plus.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
  • Exemplary communication skills (verbal, written and interpersonal).
  • Proven experience managing large volumes of data and accurate records.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work as a team member, as well as independently to accomplish goals and benchmarks.
Requirements
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends, as well as irregular hours. Ability to attend community events and meetings.
  • Valid driver’s license and evidence of insurability.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Compensation

The annual compensation range for this position is $45,000-$51,000.
