We envision a future where all people can live with dignity, opportunity, and freedom from discrimination; where families have access to quality education, healthcare, and safe working conditions; and where communities are empowered to shape a more just, equitable, and inclusive society.

Position Summary

The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator will develop, implement, and manage Voces de la Frontera's volunteer engagement infrastructure. Reporting to the Director of Development, this position will serve as the central point of coordination for recruiting, onboarding, training, placing, supporting, and retaining volunteers across the organization. The Coordinator will work collaboratively with staff to create meaningful volunteer roles and establish systems that transform community interest into sustained action, long-term leadership, and increased organizational capacity.

Essential Duties

This list is not exhaustive and may evolve in response to organizational needs.

Volunteer Engagement Strategy and Program Development

  • Create and maintain consistent systems, procedures, and tools for volunteer recruitment, intake, onboarding, placement, communication, recognition, retention, and offboarding.
  • Assess existing volunteer practices and recommend improvements that strengthen coordination, accessibility, responsiveness, and the volunteer experience.
Recruitment, Onboarding, and Placement
  • Recruit volunteers through community outreach, organizational partnerships, public events, digital communications, and supporter networks.
  • Respond promptly to volunteer inquiries and conduct intake conversations to understand volunteers' skills, interests, language abilities, availability, and goals.
  • Coordinate volunteer orientations, onboarding, background checks or other screening when appropriate, and required training.
  • Match volunteers with meaningful opportunities across organizing campaigns, community defense, legal support, membership, fundraising, communications, administrative projects, phone banks, call centers, and special events. Voces de la Frontera | Volunteer Engagement Coordinator
Leadership Development and Retention
  • Build ongoing relationships with volunteers through regular communication, follow-up, recognition, and opportunities for deeper engagement.
  • Create pathways for volunteers to take on increasing responsibility and develop into volunteer leaders, members, community fundraisers, and long-term organizational supporters.
  • Identify barriers to volunteer participation and work with staff to make opportunities welcoming, accessible, and inclusive.
Cross-Department Collaboration
  • Meet regularly with staff across departments to identify volunteer needs, develop appropriate roles, clarify supervision expectations, and coordinate placements.
  • Support large-scale and time-sensitive volunteer mobilizations, including rapid response activities, marches, elections, legal clinics, community events, and fundraising initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Development Department to strengthen relationships among volunteers, members, donors, community fundraisers, and other supporters while respecting appropriate boundaries and confidentiality.
Data, Evaluation, and Continuous Improvement
  • Maintain accurate and confidential volunteer records in organizational databases and tracking systems.
  • Track volunteer inquiries, placements, participation, retention, training, leadership development, and program outcomes.
  • Prepare regular reports and use data and volunteer feedback to evaluate impact, identify gaps, and continuously improve the volunteer engagement program.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to immigrant rights, social justice, and community organizing, with a passion for building power and creating positive change within the communities we serve.

  • At least 1-2 years of experience in volunteer coordination, community organizing, program coordination, leadership development, project management, or a related field.
  • Experience developing systems, improving workflows, or building a program or initiative is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a nonprofit, advocacy, community-based, labor, immigrant-rights, or mission-driven organization is preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, lived experience, community leadership, and professional experience will be considered.

  • Strong relationship-building, interpersonal, written, verbal, and public presentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational and project-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to design, document, implement, and improve systems and workflows.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments and with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, databases or CRMs, and standard office technology; experience with EveryAction, VAN, or volunteer-management platforms is a plus.

  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel within Wisconsin as needed.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends.
