Job summary

Young World Physical Education is seeking a part-time Volleyball Assistant Coach for Payson High School in Arizona for the 2026/2027 season. The ideal candidate will support the Head Coach in instructing athletes, demonstrating knowledge of coaching theories, and maintaining positive relationships with the school community.

This position requires various coaching certifications and a high school degree, along with the ability to motivate student athletes. Salary is set according to the Athletics Salary Schedule approved by the Governing Board.

Qualifications

  • Must possess valid National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) approved Certificates in coaching.
  • Need to have knowledge of Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) organization.
  • Required to obtain an Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Head Coach and instruct athletes in fundamentals and training.
  • Comply with confidentiality requirements.
  • Establish positive relations with students, parents, and staff.

Job Description

TITLE: HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL ASSISTANT COACH

DEPARTMENT: School

Qualifications
  • Must possess valid National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) approved Certificates in the following: Fundamentals of Coaching, Concussion in Sports, First Aid, Health & Safety.
  • Familiar with Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) organization and its Bylaws/Policies and Procedures and other requirements (high school level only).
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card within forty-five (45) days of employment.
Additional Qualifications for Cheer/Spiritline Assistant Coaches
  • Must possess a valid American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors (AACCA) certification.
  • Must have successfully completed the NFHS Cheer Safety Exam with a passing score of 75% or higher.
Job Goals

The Assistant Coach carries out the objectives of the sports program as directed by the Head Coach. The Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach and instructs athletes with regard to individual and team fundamentals, strategy and physical training, while demonstrating behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self discipline, self confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes. The Assistant Coach strives to further develop his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Complies with all HIPAA and FERPA related confidentiality requirements.
  • Develops positive relations with students, parents, school staff and the public, including members of the media, boosters, officials, players, other coaches, school administration, and fans.
  • Serves as a positive role model for students, coaching staff, and the community.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of proven coaching theories, strategies, and techniques and works with student athletes of varying abilities, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds to effectively implement these attributes.
  • Instills commitment, discipline, sportsmanship, respect, and teamwork to all athletes and coaching staff.
  • The Assistant Coach performs other related duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Athletic Director/Coordinator.
Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability

Knowledge of:

  • AIA rules, policies (high school level only), and athletic department handbook.
  • Effective coaching theories, strategies, and techniques appropriate for school athletes.
  • Federal and state laws, rules and regulations governing education and sports program implementation.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Motivate student athletes to participate and sustain their interests in the athletic program while excelling in instructional curriculum.
  • Create beneficial relationships and communicate effectively with supervisors, staff, students, vendors, other coaches and community members.
  • Apply leadership techniques.
  • Implement educational policies and procedures.
  • Supervise and evaluate coaching staff.
  • Analyze and problem solve.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Regularly required to talk or listen.
  • Frequently required to stand for long periods and to walk long distances.
  • Occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Reports To: Head Coach and/or Athletic Director/Coordinator

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Head Coach and/or Athletic Director/Coordinator in accordance with Governing Board policy.

Terms of Employment: Specific Season (Fall/Winter/Spring)

Salary: Salary for this position is via annual stipend and is set according to the Athletics Salary Schedule approved by the Governing Board.

2025/2026 Athletics Salary Schedule

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
