Job summary

TX-STAR Speech Language Services partners with school districts across Texas to provide specialized educational support for students with a wide range of learning and accessibility needs. We are seeking Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments for school-based opportunities in the Houston area.

These positions aim to improve access, promote independence, and help students with visual impairments participate fully in meaningful classroom experiences.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Current Texas teaching certification.
  • Texas certification as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments.
  • Knowledge of assessment tools and procedures used to evaluate visual functioning.
  • Familiarity with accessible instructional materials, assistive technology, and specialized teaching strategies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to support students with diverse learning and behavioral needs.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with families and school-based teams.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments to identify students’ visual functioning, academic strengths, and areas requiring additional support
  • Provide direct and consultative instruction tailored to students with visual impairments
  • Adapt lessons, assignments, and instructional materials into accessible formats such as Braille and large print
  • Incorporate assistive technology, tactile resources, and other specialized learning tools
  • Implement instructional goals, services, and accommodations outlined in students’ Individualized Education Programs
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, related-service providers, campus staff, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Consult with families and school personnel regarding accessibility strategies, student progress, and educational needs
  • Help students develop independent learning, self-advocacy, and functional skills
  • Monitor student performance and adjust instructional supports based on progress
  • Maintain accurate assessment reports, service records, progress updates, and required compliance documentation
