Job description

Overview

The UA Wildcat Corps VISTA project aims to empower low-income communities in Arizona by addressing critical poverty-related challenges through community-driven solutions. Working within the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension’s statewide Family, Consumer and Health Sciences team, this VISTA will help build a first-of-its-kind, strength-based volunteer train-the-trainer curriculum focused on maternal health and well-being. The curriculum will address the mental, behavioral, physical, and nutritional health needs of mothers and mothers-to-be across Arizona’s diverse frontier, rural, urban, and tribal communities—giving them the resources, knowledge, and support they need throughout pregnancy and their children’s early years. The VISTA will co-develop the curriculum that will be reviewed with internal, state, and national committees before the training is piloted with community volunteers serving low-income families. Additionally, the member will co-develop a professional development protocol to onboard, support, and evaluate volunteers over time. This is a unique opportunity to build lasting volunteer infrastructure that will continue lifting Arizona families out of poverty long after your year of service.

Member Duties
  • Co-develop a strength-based volunteer training curriculum with the statewide FCHS Extension team covering maternal mental, behavioral, physical, and nutritional health for low-income mothers and mothers-to-be.
  • Develop training curriculum and materials for staff to train volunteers to deliver maternal health education.
  • Evaluate a pilot of the curriculum in its effectiveness to deliver maternal health education in select frontier, rural, urban, and tribal Arizona communities.
  • Coordinate internal, state, and national curriculum reviews to ensure quality and cultural responsiveness.
  • Co-develop a train-the-trainer professional development protocol to recruit, onboard, support, and evaluate volunteers throughout their service.
  • Co-design data collection tools to measure volunteer reach and program impact.

Bilingual in Spanish preferred but not required.
