The Department of Nursing at John Carroll University seeks to fill a Visiting Assistant Professor ( VAP ) position. VAP positions can be up to three (3) years and would renew each year based on a review of the educator. Full consideration will be given to applications that are complete by April 15, 2025, although applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The hire start date is August 2025. John Carroll University is also seeking to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor Position in the Department of Nursing. Applicants are eligible to apply to each position if they would like to be considered for both. The University is dedicated to teaching excellence that contributes to a rich intellectual environment. Visiting Assistant Professors teach a 4-4 course load. Visiting Assistant Professors also engage in service work, primarily in the department with activities such as academic advising and opportunities in the University with activities in the Student Health Center.
About the Department of Nursing
John Carroll University recently began a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing program in August of 2023 and is currently seeking CCNE accreditation. The program is growing quickly. The Department is committed to a culturally diverse faculty and student body. Specifically, the Department prepares students to be multiculturally and globally competent nurses who deeply understand issues of race, inclusion, privilege, and oppression. In addition to supporting the sharing and teaching of different points of view and exposing students to various clinical environments across Northeast Ohio.
Courses in the department are offered in-person at the undergraduate level.

Faculty teaching a nursing course shall provide a syllabus to each nursing student that includes the title of the course, the number of credits, and whether it is a lab, clinical, or didactic, the course description, course objectives, teaching strategies, including the job title, credentials or other information describing the background of an individual teaching, whose qualifications are directly related to the course, the methods of evaluation, the required textbooks or learning resources. The faculty will then design and implement teaching strategies that will assist a nursing student to meet the course objectives or outcomes, evaluate each nursing student’s achievement and progress, and at the conclusion of each course, the faculty shall compare the number of planned clinical hours as established in the syllabus with the number of clinical and lab hours actually provided to students and report the course data to the administrator. Faculty are responsible for committee work and adhered to the MEP .
The faculty also have obligations for employment outlined in the document Teaching at JCU : A Guide for Faculty. Some sample responsibilities include timely and proper documentation of midterm and final grades, adherence to FERPA standards, creating syllabi, supervision of teaching assistants, evaluation of student achievement, office hours availability, and additional syllabus requirements.
Required Qualifications
Faculty teaching a nursing course will have proof of completion of an approved registered nursing education program, experience for at least two years in the practice of nursing as a registered nurse, a master’s degree in nursing or equivalent (if the candidate has a bachelors of science in nursing degree the master’s degree can be an equivalent outside of nursing – ie: education), and current, valid licensure as a registered nurse in Ohio.
Desired clinical areas of expertise include adult health/medical-surgical nursing, maternal/child health, psych-mental health, community health, and/or critical care. Candidates with expertise in more than one specialty area are highly desired.
Preferred Qualifications
University core business hours are generally 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. However, this position may require work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations.
