The Alaska Department of Law invites applications for a one-year contract position as a Visiting Assistant Professor specializing in Physical Geography or Environmental Studies. The role involves teaching undergraduate courses, advising students, and mentoring majors, with an anticipated starting salary of approximately $65,000. All classes must be conducted in person at the Foggy Bottom Campus, and the position is eligible for renewal after the first year.
The Department of Geography and Environment at GW is committed to teaching that focuses on the most critical issues of the 21st century to advance a more sustainable and equitable future. Applications are invited for a one-year contract, with a possible one-year renewal, non-tenure track position in our department at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor with a specialty in Physical Geography or Environmental Studies/Science.
Reporting to the Department chair, the Visiting Assistant Professor of Geography will teach a 3:3 load from the list below, with some repeated classes from Fall to Spring semesters.
1. Intro to Physical Geography or Society and Environment (Intro to Envir. Studies) – both 1000-level;
2. Two from among the following: Geomorphology/Natural Hazards, Biogeography, Weather and
Climate*, Water Resources*, Socio-Ecological Systems*, and Climate Change*
*are already or can be cross-listed as graduate classes. Equivalent courses will be considered.

The Visiting Assistant professor will also help with advising students, participating in department events, and serving as a mentor to environmental studies and science majors.
Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a PhD or will have completed all requirements for a PhD in Geography, Environmental Studies/Science or an allied field by the date of appointment. Applicants must have experience using a variety of methodologies that can translate into pedagogical use. GW has smart classrooms, a 29-seat spatial analysis lab, and some very limited wet lab availability.
Position & Salary Details: This position is a one-year contractual appointment beginning on August 1, 2025 through July 31, 2026 and will be eligible for one one-year renewal. All course instruction must be conducted in person on our Foggy Bottom Campus. Anticipated salary is approximately $65,000. We will continue to review applications until the position is filled.
