Qualifications

• Required: Bachelor's degree in special education or 27 semester hours in the education of students with disabilities; eligible for Virginia Collegiate Professional License.
• Comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment.
• Employ special educational strategies and techniques to improve development of sensory- and perceptual-mmotor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
• Instruct students in academic subjects using varied techniques such as phonetics and multi-sensory learning.
• Teach socially acceptable behavior following individualized education programs (IEPs).
• Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities using various instructional techniques and technologies.
• Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time.
• Establish and enforce rules for behavior and an environment conducive to learning.
• Meet with parents to discuss progress and determine priorities for their children and their individualized educational needs.
• Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop IEPs.
• Maintain accurate student records and prepare reports as required by laws and policies.
• Establish clear objectives for lessons and communicate them to students.
• Develop plans for effective communication and monitoring in inclusive settings.
• Provide crisis intervention as needed in inclusive classrooms.
• Assist in data collection for appropriate classroom interventions.
• Serve on multidisciplinary teams as appropriate.
