Virtualization Engineer – VMware & Citrix - in Bristol, CT - NOT remote.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Virtualization Engineer to support and administer enterprise VMware, Citrix, and related infrastructure environments. This position is responsible for maintaining the reliability, performance, scalability, and security of business-critical virtual infrastructure and applications.

The Virtualization Engineer will provide hands-on operational support across VMware vSphere/ESXi and Citrix environments, including system administration, monitoring, troubleshooting, upgrades, migrations, performance optimization, and incident resolution.

The ideal candidate has strong experience supporting large-scale enterprise environments and is comfortable troubleshooting complex infrastructure and application delivery issues. This position will also participate in an on-call rotation supporting critical production systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Administer and support VMware vSphere, ESXi, and vCenter environments.

Citrix Administration

• Administer and support enterprise Citrix XenApp / Virtual Apps and Desktops environments.
• Manage Citrix farms/sites, published applications, policies, user environments, and associated infrastructure.
• Publish and maintain applications and ensure reliable application delivery to end users.
• Install, configure, patch, and upgrade Citrix components and supporting technologies.
• Monitor Citrix environments using ControlUp, Citrix Director, and/or similar monitoring tools.
• Analyze session performance, resource utilization, application responsiveness, and user experience.
• Troubleshoot complex user access, authentication, session, profile, and application performance issues.
• Conduct root-cause analysis and implement permanent corrective solutions for recurring problems.
• Maintain Citrix configurations and policies in accordance with enterprise security and operational standards.

Infrastructure Operations & Support

• Respond to infrastructure incidents, service requests, problems, and planned changes through established ticketing and escalation processes.
• Monitor infrastructure health and proactively identify potential availability or performance issues.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production-impacting incidents while meeting established SLA requirements.
• Coordinate with server, storage, network, security, application, and other infrastructure teams to resolve complex technical issues.
• Participate in structured change management processes for production infrastructure.
• Perform system upgrades, migrations, maintenance, and decommissioning activities with appropriate testing and rollback procedures.
• Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation for high-severity and production-impacting incidents.
• Support scheduled maintenance activities that may occasionally occur outside normal business hours.

Documentation & Process Improvement

• Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including runbooks, standard operating procedures (SOPs), system configurations, troubleshooting procedures, and knowledge-base articles.
• Document incident resolutions and root-cause findings to improve future troubleshooting and operational efficiency.
• Identify opportunities to automate repetitive infrastructure administration and support activities.
• Follow ITIL-based incident, problem, request, and change management practices.

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience supporting enterprise virtualization and infrastructure environments.
• Strong hands-on experience with VMware vSphere, ESXi, and vCenter.
• Strong experience administering Citrix XenApp and/or Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops.
• Experience with VMware technologies including vMotion and Storage vMotion.
• Experience administering and troubleshooting Windows Server environments.
• Experience monitoring and troubleshooting virtual infrastructure performance and capacity.
• Strong understanding of virtualization concepts, storage, networking, Active Directory, DNS, and enterprise infrastructure dependencies.
• Experience performing infrastructure upgrades, migrations, patching, and lifecycle management.
• Experience troubleshooting complex production issues and performing root-cause analysis.
• Experience working within enterprise ticketing, incident management, and change management processes.
• Ability to create clear technical documentation, SOPs, and operational runbooks.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with infrastructure, application, networking, security, and support teams.
• Ability to participate in an after-hours/on-call support rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with ControlUp or comparable infrastructure and Citrix monitoring platforms.
• VMware certifications such as VMware Certified Professional (VCP).
• Citrix certifications or equivalent demonstrated Citrix administration experience.
• Experience supporting highly available, large-scale enterprise production environments.
• Experience with infrastructure automation and scripting using PowerShell or similar technologies.
• Familiarity with ITIL service management practices.
