Responsibilities

• Monitor assigned patient’s condition and behavior at all times.
• Remains at bedside unless relieved by an appropriate staff member.
• Verbally redirects the patient from participating in at risk behaviors.
• Completes observation reports at the assigned times.
• Takes initiative in compassionately rendering service or responding to needs.
• Immediately reports to the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance or exhibits unusual behavior.
• Collaborates to identify and report patient safety issues and removes hazards as appropriate.
• Participates in hand-off of pertinent information/behavior about assigned patient on unit and at shift end.
• Assists with activities of daily living and meeting nutritional needs.
• Facilitates communication among visitors, employees, and physicians within assigned unit.
• Ensures a safe and clean environment for patients and health care team.
• Documents care provided using worksheets and/or the electronic medical record.

JOB SUMMARYThe Virtual Patient Sitter at North Mississippi Health Services Systems is responsible providing continuous observation to our patients who met specific criteria for virtual observation. The role requires observing the patient for actual or potential harmful behaviors, such as pulling at tubes, dressings and IVs, climbing out of bed, restlessness, wandering in the patient room, other unexpected behaviors, as well as observing for a safe environment. The role requires redirecting the patient when applicable and documenting the hourly observations and redirections. The role requires summoning the nursing staff when there are observed changes in patient condition. The role requires effective communication, problem-solving skills, to be knowledgeable and adjustable to understand and to respond to the emotional states and mindsets of the patient. The role requires the ability to maintaining a positive and caring attitude towards patients, staff, and visitors.

JOB FUNCTIONS

• Tasked to monitor both visually and audibly the assigned patient’s condition and behavior at all times.
• Remains at the bedside of assigned patient at all times, unless relieved by an appropriate staff member.
• Verbally redirects the patient from participating in at risk behaviors.
• Completes observation reports at the assigned times.
• Takes initiative in compassionately rendering service or responding to needs.
• Immediately reports to the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance, control, or other nursing interventions or exhibits unusual behavior or verbalizations.
• Collaborates to identify and report patient safety issues. Assures patient environment is safe, reporting any safety hazards to the charge nurse. Removes visible hazards and reports, as appropriate.
• Participates in hand-off of pertinent information/behavior about assigned patient when arriving on unit and upon completion of shift assignment.
• Assits with plan of care by providing and/or assisting with activities of daily living, including but not limited to personal hygiene, grooming, mobility, and comfort.
• Assists patients in meeting nutritional needs, including but not limited to assisting with feeding, providing fluids and supplements.
• Facilitates and directs communication among visitors, employees, and physicians within assigned unit.
• Ensures a safe and clean environment for patients and health care team.
• Documents care provided using worksheets and/or the electronic medical record.
