Responsibilities

While this position provides virtual patient companion services to the patients of CommonSpirit Health across the United States, this position must work on-site at our Phoenix AZ Virtual Hospital located at 3033 N. 3rd Avenue.

Virtual Patient Companion

Working as a Patient Companion is a rewarding career that allows you to help people in need across the United States in a 24/7 virtual call center environment. As part of our highly specialized team of patient caregivers at CommonSpirit Health's Virtual Hospital in Phoenix, AZ, this position will continually monitor patients that have been identified as being high risk of falling, elopement, illicit drug/alcohol use, disoriented/demented, pulling out lines/tubes and/or other areas of potential concern that could jeopardize their safety or ability to heal at 140+ hospitals across 21 states. Patient Companions are naturally compassionate individuals who are comfortable talking to people who might be emotional, panicked, stressed or in pain. While working under stress, the right person will be eager to work virtually with our patients in a calm and efficient manner and respond to situations ensuring the best possible outcome for the patient. What You'll Do
  • Utilize live non-recorded streaming video equipment and two-way communication devices to be the eyes and ears for our onsite patient care team by maintaining continuous surveillance of assigned patients across the country.
  • Recognize emergency and non-emergency behavioral changes, evaluate situations, and communicate or report as needed to ensure patient safety and well-being.
  • Practice active listening and observation to anticipate changes in behavior and gather critical details for onsite staff.
  • Serve as a communication link for patients, providing reassurance or escalation as needed, without being physically present in the room.

Work Requires
  • Recognizing signs of patient agitation, impulsiveness, line/tube pulling, or substance use.
  • Following protocols for notifying staff of safety concerns and maintaining effective communication.
  • Reporting behavioral changes and escalating as necessary.
  • Knowledge or ability to learn hospital procedures, equipment, and terminology.
Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor patients via video and telecommunication tools, ensuring appropriate interaction and safety.
  • Communicate effectively with bedside staff and document observations and actions accurately.
  • Report technical issues and changes in patient behavior promptly.
Qualifications
Required
  • High School diploma or equivalent plus 3 years of recent patient care experience, or completion of fundamentals of nursing and clinical practice in RN school.
Preferred
  • Current certification/license as Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, EMT, or higher, or enrollment in a healthcare program.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to learn and operate streaming video and hospital systems.
  • Ability to observe, document, and communicate effectively.
  • Technical troubleshooting, basic math, and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Effective relationship-building and understanding of healthcare procedures.
