Job summary

Mt. Pleasant Public Schools is seeking a Virtual Learning & Lab Mentor for the 2026-2027 school year, supporting online courses and lab activities.

The role involves enrolling students, ensuring course approvals, monitoring weekly progress, and coordinating with instructors, administrators, and families in a flexible, welcoming environment. The position is 180 student contact days, with a starting wage of 16.38 USD per hour.

Qualifications

  • Two years of study at an institution of higher education or an Associate's degree or higher.
  • Ability to work with students and teachers in a classroom setting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with enrollment.
  • Ensure the chosen course is approved by the school and meets graduation requirements.
  • Monitor student progress weekly and help the student stay on track to complete the course on time.
  • Manage classroom/labs.
  • Establish clear expectations and guidelines.
  • Communicate with the online instructor, school administrators, and parents using email, text messaging, and phone.
  • Establish rapport with students and encourage academic success.
  • Meet with the student in person or virtually and keep records of meetings.
  • Assign final grades to the student transcript after the score is submitted by the online instructor.
  • Advocate for the student.
  • Help interpret instructor feedback and rubrics.
  • Teach self-directed, independent learners with available resources.
  • Create a welcoming, supportive, and flexible learning environment.
  • Connect students to a teacher in the building with subject area knowledge when necessary.
  • Report virtual learners for pupil count days and archive records for audit purposes.

Virtual Learning & Lab Mentor

Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of study at an institution of higher education, or Associate's (or higher) degree, or meet rigorous standards through formal state or local academic assessment of ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Evidence of ability to work successfully with students and teachers in a classroom setting.
  • Neat personal appearance.
  • Wellness oriented individual.
  • High moral character, integrity, and strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates use of correct written and verbal communication skills.
  • Evidence of computer skills.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • Understanding of and/or interest in learning more about student culture and diverse backgrounds.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES in accordance with the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Mentor Requirements for Online Learning
  • Assist with enrollment.
  • Ensure the chosen course is approved by the school and meets the student's graduation requirements.
  • Monitor student progress weekly and help the student stay on track to complete the course successfully and on time.
  • Manage classroom/labs.
  • Establish and communicate clear expectations and guidelines.
  • Communicate with the online instructor, school administrators, and parents using email, text messaging, and phone.
  • Establish rapport with students and encourage academic success.
  • Meet with the student as needed (in person when possible or virtually if necessary) and keep records of the meetings.
  • Assign final grade to the student transcript after the score is submitted by the online instructor.
  • Respond to instructor email.
  • Act as liaison between the course, the course instructor, and the student.
  • Advocate for the student.
  • Help interpret instructor feedback by reviewing the assignment and the rubric or grading standards with the student.
  • Teach and encourage students to be self-directed, independent learners who are responsible for their coursework, but ensure resources are available to help them succeed.
  • Create a learning environment that is welcoming, supportive, and flexible enough to meet individual student needs.
  • Connect students to a teacher in the building with subject area knowledge when necessary.
  • Report virtual learners for pupil count days and archive records for audit purposes.
REPORTS TO:

The Alternative Education Coordinator or designee.

JO JOB GOAL:

To successfully work with students for academic goal setting, coaching, mentoring and encouraging students to stay engaged, persist and reach goals.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

A minimum of 180 days or student contact days.

Salary:

At-Will Non-Union starting at $16.38 per hour
