Job summary

Stand Together’s AFP-Virginia role seeks a strategic Deputy State Director to shape policy and grassroots priorities across the Commonwealth. You’ll travel regularly throughout Virginia, partnering with the State Director to drive strategy, policy development, and coalition engagement.

You’ll lead major initiatives, supervise teams, and represent AFP publicly to policymakers and partners, leveraging deep knowledge of public policy and political landscapes to create lasting impact.

Qualifications

• Strong working knowledge of public policy, politics, and government affairs.
• Experience with legislative affairs, lobbying, policy development, coalition building, or grassroots advocacy.
• Entrepreneurial mindset, ownership, problem solving, and proactive execution.
• Proven political judgment and ability to distinguish short-term activity from lasting impact.
• Experience building trusted relationships with elected officials and community leaders.
• Experience leading and developing high-performing teams.
• Excellent communication and public representation skills.
• Familiarity with Virginia's political landscape or the ability to learn quickly.

Responsibilities

• Partner with the State Director to build and execute strategy across public policy, government affairs, grassroots advocacy, and political engagement in Virginia.
• Track Virginia's General Assembly, executive branch, elections, and policy landscape and translate it into clear strategy.
• Build trusted relationships with legislators, administration officials, coalition partners, and community leaders.
• Lead major legislative and advocacy initiatives from strategy through execution with cross-functional teams.
• Supervise, coach, and develop team members to maintain a high-performing culture.
• Represent AFP publicly with policymakers, coalition partners, media, and other audiences.
