The Scruggs Company, a Georgia construction leader and part of Construction Partners, Inc., has an opening for a Vice President, Quality Control in Auburn, Georgia (metro Atlanta). This position will provide leadership and expertise to support our rapid growth.

Job Summary

We are seeking a visionary and highly experienced Vice President of Quality Control to lead all aspects of our quality control programs, including asphalt mix designs. This executive will set a strategic vision for quality, ensuring all asphalt products not only meet but exceed corporate standards, industry best practices, and federal, state, and local regulations.

The ideal candidate is a proactive leader with deep knowledge of asphalt production, laboratory testing procedures, and quality management systems.

Essential duties and responsibilities
  • Strategic leadership:Develop, implement, and lead a comprehensive, company-wide quality control and quality assurance strategy that aligns with overall business objectives.
  • Team management:Recruit, train, and manage a high-performing quality control team, fostering a culture of excellence, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversight of procedures:Develop and enforce rigorous testing protocols and procedures for all raw materials, mix designs, and finished asphalt products.
  • Compliance and audits:Ensure strict adherence to all applicable regulatory standards, including those from the EPA, OSHA, FHWA, FAA, city/county governments, GDOT, ALDOT, and FDOT.
  • Problem-solving:Lead investigations into quality issues, performing root cause analyses to implement effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Process improvement:Analyze quality data to identify trends and opportunities for improving production efficiency and product consistency.
  • Customer relations:Serve as a key liaison for customer inquiries and material issues, communicating the company's quality system and resolving concerns.
  • Innovation:Lead the development of new asphalt mix designs and stay current with technological advancements and best practices in the industry.
  • Reporting:Regularly report on quality performance, metrics, and key initiatives to leaders across The Scruggs Company.
Required skills and qualifications
  • Education:A bachelor’s degree in a related technical field is preferred, though this can be overcome with a combination of education and experience.
  • Experience:A minimum of 8 years of managerial experience in quality control, preferably within the asphalt production or heavy civil construction industry. Experience with P-401, Marshall Mix, and Superpave designs are a plus.
  • Industry knowledge:Comprehensive knowledge of asphalt production processes, materials, testing methods, and relevant equipment. This person should have extensive experience with all aspects of asphalt production and laydown, in addition to being able to troubleshoot quality issues at the plant, lab, and roadway.
  • Certification:Should be GDOT asphalt level 2 certified and be a certified GDOT asphalt mix designer.
  • Leadership:Demonstrated experience building and mentoring effective teams and managing departmental functions.
  • Technical skills:Experience in asphalt mix design and managing a mix design lab is required. Proficiency with laboratory testing equipment and familiarity with industry standards (e.g., ASTM/AASHTO).
  • Problem-solving:Strong analytical skills with a proven track record of troubleshooting complex issues.
  • Communication:Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with stakeholders, from paving operators to lab technicians to senior executives.
