Job summary

IAT Insurance Group seeks a seasoned Vice President for Inland Marine & Property Underwriting. The role is based in Scottsdale, Arizona or Cheshire, Connecticut, with a hybrid schedule requiring in-office presence Monday–Wednesday and optional remote Thursday–Friday.

You will lead a team of underwriters, grow a profitable book, and shape strategy while leveraging broker relationships to drive new and renewal business. This is a high-impact leadership position with strong growth opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business, Economics, or related field.
  • 12+ years inland marine/property underwriting with leadership experience.
  • Strong understanding of inland marine and property products, pricing, and dynamics.
  • Proven ability to develop broker relationships for new and renewal business.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Own and grow a profitable inland marine and property book across the region.
  • Build and strengthen agency relationships to drive high-quality new business flow.
  • Evaluate risks, pricing, and coverage structures with experienced judgment.
  • Analyze submissions, loss history, exposure changes, and external data for underwriting decisions.
  • Set pricing reflecting risk and alignment with company strategy.
  • Structure deals using deductibles, coverage features, or reinsurance when needed.
  • Interpret policies and contracts for brokers and internal partners, including claims questions.
  • Meet distribution partners at least five times per month to stay close to market activity.

Job description

IAT Insurance Group has an immediate opening for a Vice President, Inland Marine & Property Underwriter from our Scottsdale, Arizona or Cheshire, Connecticut locations.

We’re looking for an experienced Inland Marine & Property Underwriter to step into a visible, impact-driven VP role. This is not a maintenance-only seat. You’ll lead a team of underwriters and grow a book while helping us expand our footprint - bringing ideas, relationships, and underwriting expertise that move the business forward.

This role works a hybrid schedule that requires working from the office Monday through Wednesday, with the option of working Thursday and Friday remotely.

Responsibilities
  • Own and actively grow a profitable book of inland marine and property business across the region
  • Build and strengthen agency relationships to drive consistent, high-quality new business flow
  • Evaluate risks, pricing, and coverage structures using experience and judgment - knowing when to lean in and when to walk away
  • Analyze submissions, loss history, exposure changes, and external data to make informed, disciplined underwriting decisions
  • Set pricing that reflects the risk, using advanced loss analysis and sound judgment aligned with company strategy
  • Structure deals creatively when needed, using coverage features, deductibles, or reinsurance to meet both client and company goals
  • Interpret policies and contracts clearly, providing guidance to brokers and internal partners, including claims when questions arise
  • Meet in person with distribution partners a minimum of 5 times per month. These visits keep us close to market activity, sharpen our read on emerging trends, and ensure our partners understand where we’re focused and why.

Qualifications
Must-Have
  • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field
  • 12+ years of inland marine and/or property underwriting experience, including demonstrated expertise in leading, mentoring, and managing underwriting teams
  • Strong understanding of the insurance marketplace, including inland marine and property products, pricing, and competitive dynamics
  • Proven ability to develop broker relationships that support both new and renewal business opportunities
  • Confidence in risk selection, pricing, and structuring deals, including the use of deductibles, coverage features, or reinsurance where appropriate
  • To qualify, applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and must not require VISA sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment purposes
Preferred To Have
  • Industry designations CPCU, ARM, or AU
  • Master’s Degree
  • Exposure to loss control or risk engineering - you think beyond the submission and into the actual risk

Compensation

Please note, that the annual gross salary range associated with this posting is $184,590 - $398,250. Actual salaries will vary based on factors such as a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, and geographical location related to this specific role. The total compensation will include a base salary, performance-based bonus opportunities, 401(K) match, profit-sharing opportunities, and more.
