Job description

Are you a strategic HR executive who sees people and organizational capability as drivers of business performance?

Do you enjoy developing leaders, strengthening organizations, and building people practices that create measurable results—not simply more process?

Can you bring strong judgment and an independent point of view to the executive table while developing others to lead effectively?

Gordon Electric Supply is seeking a Vice President of Human Resources to help build the leadership and organizational capability needed for its next stage of growth.

Reporting to the CFO, leading a team of three, and serving as a peer and strategic partner on the senior leadership team, the VP of HR will set direction for Gordon’s people strategy while strengthening leadership development, performance, talent acquisition, onboarding, succession planning, and employee engagement.

Gordon already has a capable HR team managing day-to-day operations. This role is intentionally focused at a higher level: developing leaders, identifying organizational opportunities and risks, improving how people systems perform, and connecting people investments to business and customer outcomes.

About Gordon Electric Supply

Gordon Electric Supply supports the electrical professionals who build and maintain the systems that power businesses and communities. Independently operated, family-owned, and professionally managed, Gordon has built its brand and performance-oriented culture around reliability, strong customer relationships, and operational excellence.

This position is based in Gordon’s modern facility in Mokena, Illinois.

Why Gordon?

People are drawn to Gordon’s warm, team-oriented environment, and they stay because growth makes the work engaging. Employees have opportunities to advance, expand their responsibilities, and continue developing within their roles. Contributions are valued, and employees’ lives outside of work are respected.

Gordon encourages people at every level to think independently, share ideas, communicate candidly, and challenge the status quo when there is a better way forward. The company is committed to an environment that combines psychological safety and compassion with accountability and high performance.

The VP of HR will join a leadership team that views HR as a true business partner and is prepared to invest thoughtfully in the people, leadership, training, technology, and organizational systems needed to support continued growth.

What You’ll Lead
  • Serve as a strategic HR partner to senior leadership, bringing a people and organizational lens to business planning, growth initiatives, acquisitions, and organizational risk.
  • Set Gordon’s people and HR strategy, prioritizing initiatives based on business impact, operational excellence, customer needs, and measurable return.
  • Strengthen organizational capability through leadership development, communication, emotional intelligence, professional development, and manager effectiveness.
  • Improve performance management and employee engagement so these processes generate meaningful conversations, accountability, and measurable change.
  • Develop department leaders to become stronger people leaders while building a culture of independent thinking, candid communication, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Improve onboarding, training, and workforce development so employees reach meaningful contribution and mastery more quickly.
  • Lead succession planning and knowledge transfer for critical positions and long-tenued employees.
  • Elevate Gordon’s talent acquisition and hiring strategy, improving candidate assessment, manager decision-making, and quality of hire.
  • Lead and develop a three-person HR team while providing strategic oversight of benefits, wellness, safety, employee relations, risk management, and employment compliance across Gordon locations.
  • Identify opportunities to responsibly use AI and HR automation to improve efficiency and organizational capability.
What You’ll Bring
  • 10+ years of progressive Human Resources experience, including senior HR leadership experience partnering with an executive team.
  • Strong business acumen and demonstrated ability to connect people investments to measurable organizational outcomes.
  • Experience building and improving HR strategy, organizational development, leadership development, performance management, employee engagement, talent acquisition, onboarding, and succession planning.
  • Exceptional judgment and the ability to identify root causes, recognize patterns, prioritize by impact, and navigate complex or ambiguous situations.
  • The executive presence to influence senior leaders, respectfully challenge assumptions, and be challenged in return.
  • A track record of developing managers and leaders rather than creating dependency on HR to solve people issues.
  • Broad HR leadership experience across employee relations, compensation and benefits, talent management, learning and development, safety, wellness, compliance, and risk management.
  • Experience supporting organizational growth or significant change; experience with technical sales teams, field employees, or distributed operations is a plus.
  • Experience using AI and automation within HR and helping others adopt these tools safely and effectively.
  • Experience with self-funded health plans, health insurance captives, or self-insurance is preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred; equivalent professional experience will also be considered. HR certifications are welcome but not required.
  • Work arrangement: On-site
  • Reports to: CFO
  • Direct reports: Three
  • Travel: Periodic travel to other Gordon locations, including California, approximately four times per year or as business needs require
  • Additional compensation: Eligibility for a performance-based bonus
  • Benefits: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage; life insurance; employee assistance program; 6% 401(k) company match; wellness activities; employee events; and additional company-sponsored benefits
