Job summary

Jobtailor in Austin, TX seeks a senior Fuel & Logistics leader to own sourcing, storage, and delivery strategies for large-scale operations. You will drive supplier relations, negotiate terms, and lead cross-functional teams to optimize cost and reliability.

You will manage complex freight, tax compliance, and safety programs while building a high-performance organization able to scale with the business. Travel up to 50% is required.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years in fuel distribution, wholesale petroleum supply, or large-scale fuel procurement
  • 5+ years in a leadership role
  • Direct experience running a fuel business or supply function (jobber, distributor, supply desk, or lead)
  • Demonstrated command of rack-based procurement and index negotiation with measurable cost-per-gallon improvement
  • Experience selecting, contracting, and managing third-party transportation providers against defined standards
  • Hands-on experience with bulk fuel storage (siting, permitting, safe operation)
  • Knowledge of multi-state motor fuel tax, dyed diesel regulations, and end-use compliance
  • Knowledge of SPCC, NFPA 30, and DOT hazmat regulations
  • Financial fluency to build/defend cost models, capital requests, and P&L
  • Experience in fast-scaling companies, systems implementation and ERP transitions
  • Ability to travel 40–50%

Responsibilities

  • Own fuel strategy, including sourcing, storage, delivery, supplier redundancy, and supply resilience
  • Negotiate fuel supply agreements using cost drivers like index, differential, freight, drop size, route density, and terms
  • Own fuel scheduling and load planning across markets
  • Manage suppliers and carriers against on-time delivery, fill accuracy, and after-hours responsiveness
  • Maintain on-call rotation and escalation coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Lead siting, permitting, design, and safe operation of on-site or regional fuel storage
  • Own compliance and fuel tax exemption, and fuel quality programs
  • Lead team scheduling, tracking, and confirming equipment moves between jobsites
  • Establish SOPs, service standards, escalation paths, staffing models, and data capture
  • Build and manage supplier network; evaluate partners via scorecards
  • Own carrier terms, qualification standards, safety records, insurance, and agreements
  • Manage freight costs, including cost per move, lane, detention, standby charges, and audits
  • Own the fuel P&L and freight/logistics cost center
  • Build and defend annual budget and rolling forecast; report KPIs
  • Deliver a first-90-day diagnostic and opportunity memo
  • Improve fuel supply agreements, implement scorecards, rationalize network, execute strategies
  • Staff teams and implement SOPs with clean data capture
  • Report to EVP, Operations; lead Fuel and Logistics teams from day one

Job description

  • Own fuel strategy, including sourcing, storage, delivery, supplier redundancy, and supply resilience
  • Negotiate fuel supply agreements using delivered-gallon cost drivers such as index, differential, freight, drop size, route density, and payment terms
  • Own fuel scheduling and load planning across all markets
  • Manage suppliers and carriers against on-time delivery, fill accuracy, and after-hours responsiveness standards
  • Maintain on-call rotation and escalation coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Determine fueling strategies for large projects using documented cost and risk comparisons
  • Lead siting, permitting, design, and safe operation of on-site or regional fuel storage
  • Own dyed diesel compliance, motor fuel tax exemption capture, environmental and fire code compliance, and fuel quality programs
  • Lead the team scheduling, tracking, and confirming equipment moves to, from, and between jobsites
  • Establish SOPs, service standards, escalation paths, staffing models, and accurate freight and delivery data capture
  • Build and manage a network of third-party trucking partners
  • Evaluate trucking partners using scorecards covering reliability, quoted delivery accuracy, tender acceptance, damage and claims, and billing accuracy
  • Own carrier commercial terms, qualification standards, operating authority, safety records, insurance, and agreements
  • Manage freight costs, including cost per move and lane, detention, standby charges, and freight audits
  • Own the fuel P&L and freight/logistics cost center
  • Build and defend the annual budget and rolling forecast, separating price and volume effects
  • Report on fuel and logistics KPIs
  • Deliver a first-90-day diagnostic and quantified opportunity memo
  • Improve fuel supply agreements, implement carrier scorecards, rationalize the partner network, and execute fuel and freight strategies
  • Staff both teams and implement defined SOPs and clean operational data capture
  • Report to the Executive Vice President, Operations
  • Lead Fuel and Logistics teams from day one
Requirements
  • 10+ years in fuel distribution, wholesale petroleum supply, or large-scale fuel procurement
  • 5+ years in a leadership role
  • Direct experience running a fuel business or supply function, such as jobber, distributor, supply desk, or fuel procurement lead for a large consuming fleet
  • Demonstrated command of rack-based procurement and index negotiation, with measurable cost-per-gallon improvement
  • Experience selecting, contracting, and managing third-party transportation providers against defined performance standards
  • Hands-on experience with bulk fuel storage, including siting, permitting, and safe operation
  • Working knowledge of multi-state motor fuel tax, dyed diesel regulations, and end-use compliance
  • Working knowledge of SPCC, NFPA 30, and DOT hazmat regulations
  • Financial fluency, including ability to build and defend a cost model, capital request, and P&L
  • Familiarity with heavy haul and oversize/overweight transportation requirements preferred
  • Background serving construction, industrial, oilfield, or equipment rental end markets preferred
  • Experience in a fast-scaling company, including systems implementation and ERP transitions preferred
  • Ability to travel 40–50%
