Job description

Hi, we’re Gravie. Our mission is to create health benefits that actually benefit small and midsize businesses and their employees. Our innovative benefit solutions and services are developed and delivered by a diverse group of unique people. We encourage you to be your authentic self - we like you that way.

The Opportunity

Gravie is seeking a Vice President of Data to define and lead how data advances our business strategy, improves the member experience, and drives better healthcare and business outcomes.

This leader will set Gravie’s data strategy and establish the platforms, governance, analytical capabilities, and organizational capabilities required to execute it. They will be responsible for helping Gravie unlock greater value from the breadth of healthcare and business data we collect, including member, employer, provider, medical claims, pharmacy, member service, product, and financial information.

Working across Product, Technology, Clinical, Actuarial, Operations, Finance, and Commercial teams, the Vice President of Data will identify opportunities and patterns that span systems and business functions. They will turn these findings into products, insights, and capabilities that improve the member experience, advance healthcare affordability, strengthen business performance, and differentiate Gravie in the market.

This is a player-coach leadership role for a strategic and technical builder who can operate at multiple levels—from shaping enterprise strategy with executives to going deep with teams on data architecture, products, governance, and analytical problems. The right leader will be comfortable personally building foundational capabilities where needed while developing the organization to scale them over time.

Responsibilities
  • Define and execute Gravie’s enterprise data strategy, aligning investments and priorities with the company’s business, product, and technology goals.
  • Identify opportunities to use Gravie’s healthcare and business data to better understand members, anticipate their needs, improve navigation, and support more personalized experiences.
  • Partner with clinical, actuarial, network, pharmacy, and operational leaders to uncover the drivers of healthcare cost and identify opportunities to improve utilization, provider performance, affordability, and ultimately reduce the cost of care.
  • Develop differentiated data products, insights, benchmarks, and services that create value for customers and unlock new revenue opportunities from Gravie’s data assets.
  • Build Gravie’s data science capability to turn healthcare and business data into predictive insights, models, and decision-support capabilities.
  • Lead the evolution of Gravie’s data architecture, pipelines, operational data store, analytical platforms, and business intelligence capabilities.
  • Establish and initially lead Gravie’s data governance function, defining ownership, standards, lineage, access, and stewardship, and build a dedicated team as the function matures.
  • Serve as an AI-forward leader who identifies and advances practical opportunities to apply artificial intelligence across Gravie’s products, member experiences, operations, and decision‑making.
  • Partner with Legal, Compliance, Security, and Clinical leaders to establish responsible AI and model‑governance practices addressing risk, bias, explainability, privacy, clinical safety, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Lead and strengthen Gravie’s existing data engineering, architecture, and analytics organization, while building governance, data science, and data‑product capabilities as the strategy and business needs mature.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CTO and executive leadership team on data strategy, investments, opportunities, and risk.
What You Bring
  • Significant leadership experience (10+ years) across enterprise data, analytics, data platforms, or data products.
  • Healthcare industry experience is required, with a demonstrated track record working with complex health plan or benefits data, including medical and pharmacy claims, member eligibility, provider and network information, utilization, and healthcare financial data.
  • A record of defining data strategy and building the capabilities, teams, and operating models needed to execute it.
  • A track record as a hands‑on data leader who can move comfortably between enterprise strategy and detailed technical, analytical, and product decisions, with the depth to challenge assumptions, evaluate architecture, and work directly with teams when needed.
  • Strong strategic, commercial, and financial judgment, including the ability to evaluate investments and prioritize opportunities based on expected value.
  • Experience applying analytics, data science, or artificial intelligence to improve customer experiences, products, operations, or financial performance.
  • Experience building or modernizing cloud data platforms, data pipelines, operational data stores, and analytical environments.
  • Strong knowledge of data architecture, security, privacy, and modern data‑management practices.
  • Experience establishing or materially advancing enterprise data‑governance programs, including ownership, stewardship, quality, metadata, lineage, and access practices.
  • Strong knowledge of HIPAA, the responsible handling of protected health information, healthcare privacy, and de‑identification principles.
  • Experience supporting healthcare security, compliance, and audit programs such as HITRUST, SOC 2, or comparable frameworks.
  • The ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and influence decisions across executive, business, clinical, and technical teams.
  • A collaborative leadership style and the ability to build alignment across technical, clinical, and business teams.
