Qualifications

  • Current Alabama veterinary technician license or eligibility.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily nursing care, safe handling, restraint, observation, and monitoring of small animal patients.
  • Assist veterinarians with procedures including exams, anesthesia monitoring, pain management, CPR, and specialty techniques.
  • Support students and interns with medication delivery, IV catheters, fluid therapy, bandaging, and patient monitoring.
  • Coordinate patient schedules, maintain accurate medical records, and monitor inventory and supplies.
  • Maintain internal medicine wards and equipment in a clean, safe, and service-ready condition.
  • Report significant changes in patient status to the veterinary team and participate in rounds.
  • Contribute to teaching and mentorship of veterinary students and rotating interns.
  • Communicate discharge education and home-care instructions to clients as directed by the team.
  • Adhere to hospital safety, infection-control, accreditation, and regulatory standards.

Job description

The McConnell Group, Inc. (TMG), a health science company and provider of clinical and research support services, is seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician to support a Small Animal Internal Medicine service in Tuskegee, Alabama. The position provides direct patient care and advanced clinical support in a veterinary teaching environment, working closely with faculty veterinarians, interns, veterinary students, hospitalized patients, and clients. The role is well suited to a technician who values teamwork, clinical learning, mentorship, and the careful coordination of complex medical cases.


Duties & Working Conditions

Responsibilities include


  • Provide daily nursing care, safe handling, restraint, observation, and clinical monitoring of small animal patients receiving internal medicine services.

  • Assist veterinarians with routine and specialized procedures, including physical examinations, diagnostic sample collection, medication administration, anesthesia monitoring, pain-management activities, CPR, and specialty procedures as assigned.

  • Support and demonstrate veterinary technical skills for students and interns, including medication delivery, IV catheter placement, fluid therapy, bandaging, and patient monitoring.

  • Coordinate patient schedules, maintain accurate medical records, and monitor inventory and supplies needed for efficient operation of the internal medicine service.

  • Maintain internal medicine treatment areas, wards, and related equipment in a clean, organized, safe, and service-ready condition.

  • Provide ongoing monitoring of hospitalized patients, document clinical observations, and promptly report significant changes in patient status to the veterinary team.

  • Participate in academic rounds and contribute to the teaching and mentorship of veterinary students and rotating interns.

  • Communicate appropriately with clients and support discharge education, home-care instructions, medication guidance, and follow-up information as directed by the veterinary team.

  • Follow applicable hospital safety, infection-control, accreditation, animal‑care, and regulatory requirements, including standards associated with IACUC, USDA, OSHA, and AVMA-COE.

  • Assist other veterinary services when time and staffing permit and perform other related duties as assigned.


Requirements

Skills/Qualifications/Requirements:


  • Graduate of an accredited veterinary technology program or an equivalent program of study.

  • Current veterinary technician license in Alabama, or eligibility to obtain Alabama licensure.

  • At least one year of veterinary practice or academic veterinary technician experience.

  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, computer, and clinical record‑keeping skills.

  • Ability to work independently within assigned responsibilities and collaboratively with veterinarians, students, interns, and other hospital personnel.

  • Ability to manage competing patient‑care priorities while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and attention to detail.


Physical Requirements:


  • Ability to safely handle and restrain small animal patients and perform routine veterinary technical procedures.

  • Ability to walk short distances and lift or carry routine parcels, supplies, and equipment used in a clinical setting.

  • Ability to operate standard office and clinical equipment and use computer‑based medical record systems.


Schedule / Travel:


  • Position is based in Tuskegee, Alabama and may require job‑related travel.
