Job summary

The McConnell Group, Inc. (TMG) is seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician to support a Small Animal Internal Medicine service in Tuskegee, Alabama.

This role involves direct patient care and advanced clinical support within a veterinary teaching environment, collaborating closely with faculty veterinarians, interns, veterinary students, hospitalized patients, and clients. The position emphasizes teamwork, clinical learning, mentorship, and careful coordination of complex medical cases,

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited veterinary technology program or an equivalent program of study.
  • Current veterinary technician license in Alabama, or eligibility to obtain Alabama licensure.
  • At least one year of veterinary practice or academic veterinary technician experience.
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, computer, and clinical record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to work independently within assigned responsibilities and collaboratively with veterinarians, students, interns, and other hospital personnel.
  • Ability to manage competing patient-care priorities while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily nursing care, safe handling, restraint, observation, and clinical monitoring of small animal patients receiving internal medicine services.
  • Assist veterinarians with routine and specialized procedures, including physical examinations, diagnostic sample collection, medication administration, anesthesia monitoring, pain-management activities, CPR, and specialty procedures as assigned.
  • Support and demonstrate veterinary technical skills for students and interns, including medication delivery, IV catheter placement, fluid therapy, bandaging, and patient monitoring.
  • Coordinate patient schedules, maintain accurate medical records, and monitor inventory and supplies needed for efficient operation of the internal medicine service.
  • Maintain internal medicine treatment areas, wards, and related equipment in a clean, organized, safe, and service-ready condition.
  • Provide ongoing monitoring of hospitalized patients, document clinical observations, and promptly report significant changes in patient status to the veterinary team.
  • Participate in academic rounds and contribute to the teaching and mentorship of veterinary students and rotating interns.
  • Communicate appropriately with clients and support discharge education, home-care instructions, medication guidance, and follow-up information as directed by the veterinary team.
  • Follow applicable hospital safety, infection-control, accreditation, animal-care, and regulatory requirements, including standards associated with IACUC, USDA, OSHA, and AVMA-COE.
  • Assist other veterinary services when time and staffing permit and perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Schedule / Travel:


  • Position is based in Tuskegee, Alabama and may require job-related travel.
