Job description

BluePearl Pet Hospital in Birmingham, AL, is hiring an exceptional Veterinary Technician in Ophthalmology

Schedule: This position will work Monday through Thursday, 8:00am - 4:00pm.

As an Ophthalmology Veterinary Technician, you will help diagnose and treat ophthalmic diseases in companion animals.

As an Ophthalmology Veterinary Technician, you will:

  • Perform basic ophthalmic diagnostic tests (tear quantity, glaucoma testing, ulcer testing) and help hold patients for detailed ocular exams.

  • Perform advanced ophthalmic diagnostic testing (retinal electrical function, etc.).

  • Set-up and assist with procedures and surgeries that restore comfort and vision ranging from outpatient procedures to basic and complex surgeries.

  • Outpatient procedures: diamond burr debridement (to stimulate corneal healing), CO2 laser (to remove eyelid margin masses).

  • Surgical procedures including eyelid surgeries, cherry eye surgery, corneal grafts, cataract surgery, retinal surgery, glaucoma surgery.

  • For patients undergoing sedation or anesthesia, place IV catheters and fluids, administer drugs through various routes, perform and monitor sedation/anesthesia (with advanced skills including constant rate infusions, paralytics, ventilation, etc.).

  • Anesthesia training is available with help from our anesthesia specialist.

  • Help organize and maintain specialized ophthalmic equipment and supplies.

  • Be the frontline in educating clients on their pet’s ocular disease and care.
