Job description

Lead Veterinary Technician

Rockville, MD. Full-time, 12‑hour shifts.

About the Role

Lead Veterinary Technician responsible for comprehensive care throughout a pet’s journey including outpatient treatments, laboratory tests, surgery assistance, and support services such as admitting and discharging patients.

Experience & Skills Requirements
  • Veterinary technician licensure strongly preferred but not required; LVT/CVT/RVT/LVMT encouraged.
  • 2–3 years of clinical experience as a veterinary technician or assistant.
  • Emergency veterinary clinical experience.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an AVMA‑accredited program preferred; or equivalent education, training and experience.
  • Proficient in phlebotomy; ability to obtain, prepare and interpret laboratory samples (blood, feces, urine, skin, etc.).
  • Confident in IVC placement and maintenance.
  • Proficient in blood smears, cytology preparation and interpretation.
  • Familiar with and confident in common radiographic positioning techniques and image capture.
  • Familiar with CPR; candidates with RECOVER BLS/ALS certification encouraged.
  • Experience and confidence in administering anesthesia and monitoring patients during anesthetic events.
Role Responsibilities
  • Support veterinarians to ensure quality veterinary care, advocate for pets, and educate clients.
  • Assist veterinarians and medical team to maximize productivity and maintain positive patient flow.
  • Assist with surgeries and procedures in accordance with state Veterinary Practice Act requirements for credentialed technicians.
  • Communicate with clients about individualized pet health concerns and offer guidance on membership options, medications and additional treatments.
  • Assist in maintaining comprehensive medical records using practice systems.
  • Obtain relevant health history and maintain medical charts.
  • Use safe restraining techniques, follow protocols, and sustain clean, sterile, organized treatment areas, exam rooms and labs.
  • Guide, mentor, and support fellow team members.
Compensation

Hourly pay rate starting at $30–$40, negotiable based on credentials and experience.
