Job summary

BluePearl Pet Hospital in Pittsburgh seeks a Licensed Veterinary Technician for its Internal Medicine department. The role includes anesthesia, radiography, phlebotomy, IV catheter placement, and client communication.

Four 10-hour shifts with rotating Saturdays and shift differentials for nights and weekends are offered. Candidates with VTS credentialing are eligible for compensation commensurate with experience.

Qualifications

• Licensed veterinary technician in good standing.
• Experience in internal medicine preferred.
• Ability to perform anesthesia and radiography.

Responsibilities

• Act as liaison between internists and clients regarding histories, care instructions, lab results, and updates.
• Perform anesthesia and sedation for CT, Endoscopy, and ultrasound-guided procedures.
• Perform digital radiography with sedation and restraint/positioning.
• Calculate medical math and administer medications.
• Place intravenous catheters and perform phlebotomy.
• Assist with endoscopic procedures and maintain equipment.
• Discharge patients with client education on insulin, SQ fluids, and feeding tube demonstrations.
• Support diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (joint taps, centesis, marrow biopsies, biopsies).
• Learn to place and maintain feeding tubes and central lines.
• Mentor and train coworkers; address client concerns with empathy.

Job description

BluePearl Pet Hospital is hiring a Licensed Veterinary Technician to work in our busy Internal Medicine department at our North Hills, Pittsburgh location.

Pay

$20.00 - $40.50 / hour. This pay band is a starting point and is dependent on experience and advancement through CareerTrax leveling system.

Schedule

Four 10-hour weekday shifts, with occasional rotating Saturdays. Candidates with VTS credentialing are eligible for compensation commensurate with experience. We also offer competitive shift differential pay for eligible hours worked for nights and weekends.

Shift differentials are based on a 4-hour minimum.

Shift Differentials

• Mon - Fri: 6pm to 8am = $3.00 Shift Differential
• Sat & Sun: 6pm to 8am = $4.50 Shift Differential
• Sat & Sun: 8am to 6pm = $3.00 Shift Differential

As an Internal Medicine Veterinary Technician, you will:

• Act as liaison between our internists and our clients regarding patient histories, care instructions, lab results, patient updates, and other topics as requested by the doctors.
• Perform anesthesia and sedation for CT scans, Endoscopy, and Ultrasound-guided procedures.
• Perform digital radiography, utilizing sedation and other restraint/positioning techniques.
• Properly calculate medical math (including constant rate infusions) and administer medications via appropriate routes and duration.
• Be proficient at performing phlebotomy and placing intravenous catheters.
• Set up and assist with endoscopic procedures (GI, nasal, urinary, airway). Clean and maintain equipment following procedure.
• Discharge Internal Medicine patients from the hospital, including basic client education such as insulin injection, SQ fluid, and feeding tube demonstrations.
• Set up and assist with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures which may include:
  • Joint Taps
  • Body cavity centesis (thoracocentesis, pericardiocentesis, abdominocentesis)
  • Bone marrow biopsy and aspirates
  • Needle aspirates
  • Laparoscopic or ultrasound-guided biopsies
• Learn to place and maintain feeding tubes and central line catheters.
• Have a passion for mentoring and training other co-workers.
• Have patience and empathy to address client concerns.

Our Continuing Education Plan includes $500/year reimbursement for CVT and $750/year for VTS. The Continuing Education allowance can roll over up to $1,500 for CVT and VTS associates. Non-Credentialed, full-time Paraprofessionals are eligible for an annual CE stipend of $150. Full-time CVT associates also receive 8 hours of CE paid hours each year. Full-time VTS associates receive 12 hours of CE paid each year. Paid CE hours can be carried over year to year up to a maximum of 24 hours. Newly hired associates will receive a pro-rated amount of any CE benefit for which they are eligible.
