If these questions resonate with you, ZooTampa is urgently looking to fill a Veterinarian Technician position. This is a critical role where you'll be an integral part of a collaborative veterinary team dedicated to the health and well-being of a diverse range of animals.
Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Animal Health, performs skilled veterinary technician duties related to the medical care of a variety of animals within a zoological park.

Your day-to-day
Essential Functions (including, but not limited to):
- Work with a veterinary team including three full-time clinical veterinarians and three full-time veterinary technicians.
- Administer medications to a variety of species.
- Restrain patients for procedures.
- Perform in-house laboratory tests.
- Observe signs of illness and abnormalities.
- Carry out medical treatments independently or with staff.
- Exercise initiative and judgment under supervision.
- Monitor patients under anesthesia.
- Assist in procedures including anesthesia, diagnostics, and surgery.
- Instruct keeper staff on animal care as prescribed.
- Record patient data electronically.
- Maintain clinic organization.
- Assist in developing protocols and policies.
- Act on behalf of the veterinarian in their absence and liaise with on-call vets.
- Additional responsibilities as determined by the veterinarian.
- Assist in the medical care of Florida manatees at the David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center.
- Perform other duties to ensure hospital operations.
What we are looking for
Qualifications and Experience:
- Some college coursework or a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree.
- Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technology program.
- Certified Veterinary Technician credentialed by the State of Florida.
- Minimum of five years in a zoo or aquarium setting, or eight years in an animal hospital.
- Strong team and communication skills.
- Ability to evaluate signs of illness across species.
- Willingness to learn about exotic and native species' husbandry and habits.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and occupational hazards.
- Leadership and instructional abilities in animal care.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Other Requirements
- Conduct activities in line with AZA standards, laws, and animal welfare guidelines.
- Lift up to 50 pounds.
- Work in Florida weather conditions, including heat and rain.
- Work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- Remain flexible for after-hours emergencies and critical care cases.
