Job description

Join to apply for the Veterinary Technician I role at The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine.

HJF is seeking a Veterinary Technician I responsible for providing daily care of research animals and assisting with research projects as directed by the Principal Investigator and/or supervisor. This is the first level of three for Veterinary Technicians.

This position supports the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) at Fort Sam Houston, conducting research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of DoD personnel through various scientific projects.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with surgical procedures, operating room maintenance, animal disease prevention, health surveillance, appropriate animal housing, and record keeping, ensuring pathogen-free techniques.
  • Handling and restraining small and large animals daily.
  • Maintaining biosafety practices, sterile equipment, pest control, quality assurance, and records.
  • Inspecting areas regularly for compliance.
  • Preparing purchase requests for animals and supplies, coordinating shipping, and maintaining inventory.

Qualifications:

  • Veterinary Technician degree or High School Diploma/GED with two years of related experience.
  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic science and math knowledge.
  • Effective use of hands for surgical preparations.
  • Compliance with occupational health and safety standards, including PPE use.
  • US Citizenship and ability to obtain/maintain a Secret Clearance.
  • Current certification in BLS or equivalent.

Physical Capabilities:

  • Lifting up to 10 lbs.
  • Prolonged standing, climbing, pulling, and lifting heavy objects.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily in a laboratory setting.
