Job summary

Humane Society of Chittenden County is seeking a Veterinary Technician to support the Community Pet Clinic and care for dogs, cats, and small animals. The role provides clinical and administrative support for wellness programs and animals in HSCC’s care.

The position is full-time, non-exempt (hourly), 40 hours per week, reporting to the Lead Veterinary Technician and Veterinary Chief Medical Officer. Experience in veterinary clinics and surgical assistance is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with spay/neuter and other surgeries for shelter and community animals.
  • Assist in in-person client care for Community Pet Clinic clients.

  • Maintain invoicing and payments in the Community Pet Clinic software (Daysmart).
  • Assist veterinarians in dentistry and other surgeries as needed.
  • Perform basic animal medical assessments and triage.
  • Prepare and interpret basic diagnostic tests.
  • Assist with euthanasia as needed.
  • Take weekly inventory for Lead Vet Tech to place orders.
  • Perform laundry and cleaning duties as needed.
  • Maintain solid attendance and punctuality.

Job Title: Veterinary Technician

JOB STATUS: Full Time, Non-Exempt (Hourly), 40hr/week

Reports To: Lead Veterinary Technician and Veterinary Chief Medical Officer

POSITION SUMMARY

The Veterinary Technician is responsible for assisting with the Community Pet Clinic and meeting the health care needs of HSCC’s dogs, cats, and small animals. The Veterinary Technician will provide clinical and administrative support for veterinary wellness programs and animals in HSCC’s care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists with spay/neuter and other surgeries for both shelter and community animals, including check in exams, monitoring of patients from induction through recovery, preparation of induction drugs, supplies, and instruments, restraint of animals, surgical prep of animals, and cleaning of the med room and surgery suite
  • Assists with in person client care for Community Pet Clinic clients for spay/neuter and wellness clinics, including answering the clinic email as needed.
  • Maintains accurate computer and paper records for medications and treatments for shelter animals, enters data into ShelterLuv software database regarding animal care, medication, surgeries, and follow up
  • Maintain accurate records, including entry of service items, invoicing, and payments in the Community Pet Clinic software (Daysmart)
  • Assists veterinarians in dentistry and other surgeries beyond spay/neuter, as needed
  • Performs basic animal medical assessment and triage to assist the veterinarian as needed
  • Prepares and interprets basic diagnostic tests
  • Assist veterinarian and/or Lead Vet Tech with euthanasia as needed
  • Assist with taking inventory weekly for Lead Vet Tech to place orders
  • Performs duties such as laundry, cleaning instruments, and other tasks as needed

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A minimum of 1-year previous applicable work experience in a veterinary clinic and/or animal shelter clinic required; previous surgical assistance experience required.
  • Veterinary Technician Certification or significant related experience desired
  • Proficiency with intubation, IV catheter placement, and injection techniques
  • Direct animal care experience is required: restraining animals, cleaning enclosures, and administering medications
  • Comfortable monitoring anesthesia and assisting with surgery
  • Experience maintaining computerized medical records
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to bend, twist, and to lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor
  • Ability to handle animals, including large canines
WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT
  • HSCC is a busy animal shelter environment with frequent noise and with the presence of animal dander and potential allergens
  • Possible exposure to sick, under-socialized and/or reactive animals in addition to potential exposure to parasites and infectious disease
  • A variety of cleaning agents are used in the facility to ensure cleanliness and the safety of animals and staff, as such use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with safety protocols may be required
