Job summary

ARISE Veterinary Center, a 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital, seeks a Veterinary Blood Bank Technician to support in-house blood banking and transfusion services. You will work with veterinarians and specialists to provide safe blood products for canine and feline patients, ensuring donor welfare and accurate records.

The role offers exposure to blood typing, crossmatching, component processing, and donor program growth in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Current CVT, RVT, or LVT certification/licensure is required.
• Experience with dogs and cats in a veterinary setting is essential.
• Strong skills in venipuncture, phlebotomy, restraint, and laboratory safety.
• Extensive experience with sedation and anesthesia for small animals.
• Ability to maintain detailed medical, laboratory, and inventory records.
• Excellent communication and client service abilities.
• Flexibility to work days, nights, weekends, and varying hours.

Responsibilities

• Screen donor animals for blood donor eligibility and monitor them during donation.
• Perform venipuncture, collect and process whole blood into components.
• Conduct blood typing, crossmatching, and hematocrit testing.
• Recruit and schedule canine and feline blood donors; coordinate donor program.
• Maintain blood product inventory, storage, labeling, and transport readiness.
• Educate clients about donation requirements and donor care.
• Support ED and specialty services as needed; collaborate with clinical teams.

Veterinary Blood Bank Technician

Schedule: Full-time; must be flexible to work days, nights, weekends, and varying hours based on hospital and blood bank needs.

Join ARISE Veterinary Center, a 24-hour emergency and specialty animal hospital, as a Veterinary Blood Bank Technician supporting our in-house blood banking and transfusion program. In this specialized veterinary technician role, you will help provide safe, high-quality blood products for canine and feline patients while working alongside emergency veterinarians, criticalists, surgeons, and internal medicine specialists.

This is an opportunity to build expertise in veterinary blood banking, transfusion medicine, donor care, laboratory procedures, and emergency and specialty veterinary medicine while playing a direct role in life‑saving patient care.

In your day-to-day you will

Blood Donor Care & Veterinary Patient Handling

• Screen canine and feline patients for blood donor eligibility based on health, medical history, and temperament.
• Safely handle, restrain, and comfort donor animals throughout the donation process using low-stress handling techniques.
• Recognize signs of fear, anxiety, and stress and respond appropriately.
• Monitor donor patients before, during, and after blood collection for adverse reactions or changes in condition.
• Provide appropriate pre- and post-donation care to support donor health and welfare.
• Maintain accurate medical records for every donor visit.

Blood Collection & Processing

• Perform safe and sterile venipuncture and blood collection from approved canine and feline donors.
• Process whole blood into components such as packed red blood cells and plasma using centrifugation and specialized blood banking equipment.
• Perform blood typing, crossmatching, hematocrit testing, and other compatibility testing.
• Follow established transfusion medicine, blood collection, and quality assurance protocols.
• Accurately document donor information, collection details, blood products, and recipient data.

Blood Donor Program

• Help recruit, screen, and schedule canine and feline blood donors.
• Communicate with donor families regarding eligibility, appointments, the donation process, and donor care.
• Help organize and participate in blood drives and donor recognition events, including events that may occur outside traditional business hours.
• Maintain accurate donor records, vaccination histories, laboratory screening results, and donation history.
• Follow up with donor families when their pet’s blood product is used, helping create a meaningful donor experience.

Blood Product Inventory & Distribution

• Maintain accurate inventory of available blood products and monitor expiration dates and storage requirements.
• Ensure blood products are properly stored, labeled, handled, and transported.
• Prepare blood products for courier transportation between ARISE and affiliated veterinary hospitals.
• Monitor blood product usage and availability, particularly during periods of high emergency and critical care volume.
• Partner with the Inventory Manager to anticipate hospital needs and maintain appropriate blood product availability.

Client Communication & Education

• Educate pet owners about the veterinary blood donation process and the importance of blood donors.
• Provide compassionate, professional communication to donor families throughout their pet’s experience.
• Answer questions and help families understand donation requirements, procedures, and follow-up care.
• Represent the blood donor program positively within the hospital and community.

Emergency & Specialty Veterinary Support

Because this is a growing role within a busy emergency and specialty hospital, you may also support other clinical and operational needs, including:

• Float as a Veterinary Technician within the Emergency and Critical Care service.
• Assist the sonographer with outpatient ultrasound procedures.
• Support the Head of Training & Development, Medical Director, or administrative team with additional projects and assignments.
• Adapt to changing priorities and assist where needed to support patient care and hospital operations.

Laboratory, Compliance & Equipment

• Perform basic laboratory procedures related to blood banking and patient care.
• Maintain accurate databases and records for donor health, donations, blood products, and product usage.
• Clean, disinfect, and maintain blood collection and laboratory equipment.
• Follow veterinary regulations, laboratory safety procedures, sanitation protocols, and internal quality standards.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe blood banking environment.

What You Bring

Required

• Current CVT, RVT, or LVT certification/licensure.
• Veterinary technician experience working with dogs and cats.
• Strong knowledge of venipuncture, phlebotomy, animal restraint, and laboratory safety.
• Extensive experience with sedation and anesthesia of canine and feline patients.
• Proficiency in low-stress animal handling and restraint.
• Strong attention to detail, organization, and accuracy.
• Ability to maintain detailed medical, laboratory, and inventory records.
• Strong communication and client service skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
• Flexibility to work days, nights, weekends, and varying hours based on the needs of a 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and safely restrain veterinary patients.

Fear Free Certification: If not currently Fear Free Certified, certification will be required after hire.

Preferred

• Previous experience in a veterinary blood bank, transfusion medicine, animal hospital, emergency hospital, or veterinary laboratory.
• Experience with canine and feline blood typing and crossmatching.
• Knowledge of blood component processing, storage, and transfusion protocols.
• Experience with veterinary donor recruitment and donor program management.
• Experience communicating with clients and educating pet owners.
• Experience in emergency, critical care, surgery, or specialty veterinary medicine.
