Job summary

Foothills Animal Clinic in El Paso is seeking a dedicated Veterinary Technician to assist veterinarians, restrain patients, prepare medications, and perform routine in-house lab work to support high-quality care.

You will monitor hospitalized patients, assist with dental cleanings and surgeries, take radiographs, manage sterile instruments, and educate clients on procedures and aftercare. This on-site role includes weekend availability and opportunities for professional growth.

Qualifications

• Weekend work required.
• Prior veterinary experience preferred.
• Ability to lift patients/equipment up to 25 pounds; heavier with assistance.
• Practice OSHA safety techniques including proper PPE.
• Basic math to calculate medication dosages.
• Basic computer skills, familiarity with MS Office.
• Strong communication to ensure patient safety.

Responsibilities

• Assist the veterinarian during examinations, providing restraint as needed.
• Prepare and administer medications, vaccines, serums, and treatments as prescribed.
• Perform routine dental cleanings under the veterinarian's direction.
• Administer anesthesia and monitor animals' responses to ensure proper dosages.
• Obtain radiographs with proper positioning and techniques.
• Care for and monitor animals recovering from surgery.
• Perform laboratory tests on blood, urine, and feces to aid diagnosis.
• Administer emergency first aid as needed.
• Collect, prepare, and label samples for lab testing.
• Clean and sterilize instruments and equipment.
• Provide the veterinarian with necessary equipment and instruments.
• Fill prescriptions, measuring medications and labeling containers.
• Prepare animals for surgery, including shaving areas and placing IV catheters.
• On-call for emergencies and after-hours treatments once a month.
• Maintain clean examination rooms and treatment areas.

The Veterinary Technician assists the veterinarians and other technicians with patient care and treatment, monitors hospitalized pets, maintains inventory, prepares prescriptions, performs routine in-house laboratory work, educates clients regarding veterinary care and procedures, and assists with surgical procedures.

Essential Responsibilities

• Assist the veterinarian during examination of animals, providing restraint as needed to work safely and effectively.
• Prepare and administer medications, vaccines, serums, and treatments, as prescribed by the veterinarian.
• Perform routine dental cleanings on animals under the direction of the veterinarian.
• Administer anesthesia to animals, under the direction of the veterinarian, and monitor animals’ responses to anesthetics so that dosages can be adjusted.
• Obtain radiographs of animals with knowledge of proper positioning and techniques.
• Care for and monitor the condition of animals recovering from surgery.
• Perform laboratory tests on blood, urine, and feces, such as urinalyses and blood counts, to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems.
• Administer emergency first aid, such as performing emergency resuscitation or other lifesaving procedures.
• Collect, prepare, and label samples for laboratory testing, culture, or microscopic examination.
• Clean and sterilize instruments, equipment, and materials.
• Provide the veterinarian with the correct equipment and instruments, as needed.
• Fill prescriptions, measuring medications and labeling containers.
• Prepare animals for surgery, performing such tasks as shaving surgical areas and placing IV catheters.
• On-call for emergencies and after hour treatments once a month.
• Maintain clean examination rooms and treatment areas.

Requirements/Qualifications

• Ability to work on weekends as required
• Previous veterinary experience preferredAbility to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance
• Practice OSHA safety techniques including proper PPE
• Basic math and the ability to calculate medication dosages
• Basic computer skills, familiarity with MS office applications, etc.
