Job description

In this position, you will be providing a valued service by assuring public health and safety. You will examine and oversee the general health of all animals at St. Louis County's animal shelters.

Examples of Duties
  1. Examine and evaluate the overall health of all animals in the shelter.
  2. Assist with euthanasia procedures as directed by a veterinarian.
  3. Administer medication, assist veterinarian during surgery, and monitor animals during recovery.
  4. Conduct pre-adoption health examinations and prepare animals for adoption.
  5. Monitor medical supplies and record the use of controlled substances to ensure DEA compliance.
  6. Implement current best practices in animal health and welfare.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Equivalent to education in veterinary science and one year of experience working with animals.
  • Certification as a Veterinary Technician by the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board within six months of employment.
Additional Information

Selection and Appointment: A selection committee will evaluate applicants based on education, experience, answers to questions, references, and other relevant information. Only the most qualified candidates will be interviewed. Candidates must score at least 70 on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After interviews, top candidates will be certified to the Department Director for final decision.

All conditional offers are contingent upon passing a urinalysis screening for illegal drugs, paid for by the County. New employees must also attest to their COVID-19 vaccination status within 30 days of employment. Non-vaccinated employees will undergo weekly testing until fully vaccinated or until the County reaches a 70% vaccination rate with moderate COVID-19 transmission.
