Ansible Government Solutions, LLC (Ansible) is currently recruiting Veterinary Technicians to support the James J. Peters VA Medical Center located at 130 W Kingsbridge Rd. Bronx, NY 10468. Working hours are Mon-Fri, 8:00am-4:30pm. Weekend coverage may be required on a rotational basis. Competitive packages are available for qualified candidates.

Responsibilities
- Responsible for performing the husbandry, pre and post animal surgery care and communication with the veterinary technician, veterinarian, researchers, and research staff necessary for bio-medical research projects.
- Have knowledge of the normal cleaning and housing (caging) requirements of animals based on species, size, and sex.
- Be skilled in providing special feeding subcutaneously and in administering medication orally or by injection.
- Be able to operate various types of animal research equipment (ventilated housing units, cage washing systems, autoclaves, automatic watering equipment, and environmental monitoring systems). Monitors the equipment and reports data to the VMU supervisor.
- Record data for animal census and per diem system and provide report data as required by federal regulations.
- Ensure the preparation and timely collection of biological samples for pathogen testing.
- Participate in the disease and health surveillance program, developing data related to animal health surveillance.
- Observe animals and note observations of any sickness or illness, preparing summaries of relevant health and compliance observations.
- Collect biological samples for use in approved research projects or disease surveillance.
- Coordinate daily health checks, administration of medications, treatments, post-surgical care, and oversee experiments by staff, ensuring timely notification of research staff of observations or deviations.
- Schedule and coordinate use of animal procedure rooms.
- Implement comprehensive monitoring programs of several species of animal subjects to prevent, detect, and document violations of all laws and regulations for the control and eradication of infectious, contagious, communicable diseases, parasites, and disease vectors.
- Lead and plan the appropriate housing needed to execute multiple biomedical research projects and a program of compliance with federal regulations.
- Apply AAALAC and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals standards and recommendations as they relate to feeding and maintaining experimental animals.
- Participate in developing, implementing, and maintaining a program of monitoring VMU compliance with AAALAC, AWA, USDA, NIH, and VA laws, regulations, and guidelines.
- Monitor the animal program, including research laboratories and experimental techniques, ensuring that professional and technical staff receive adequate training before they receive approval to handle animals for any procedures. Maintain familiarity and follow standard operating procedures developed for the VMU.
Qualifications
- Trained in basic animal husbandry, including handling animals, cage changes, cage wash operations, managing food and water, and sanitation, with at least 1 year of experience in laboratory animal husbandry.
- Competent in assessment of sick animals, administering treatment prescribed by a veterinarian, with a solid knowledge of rules and regulations.
- At least 1 year experience working in a laboratory animal vivarium.
- ALAT Certified and working toward LAT Certification.
- Completed Assistant Technician certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science and is eligible for or has completed this certification at the Technician level. 1-2 years experience in animal husbandry in a research setting would be typical for a technician at this level.

- Sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders during the work shift.
- Lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist.
- Lift up to 20 lbs.
- Carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.
- Push/pull with 30 lbs of force.
