Position Overview

Thrive Pet Healthcare Specialists are seeking an experienced Veterinary Surgical Technician to join our growing specialty and emergency hospital. This role is essential in supporting advanced surgical procedures, ensuring patient safety under anesthesia, and delivering exceptional perioperative nursing care.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, and thrives in a fast-paced surgical environment while maintaining a high standard of patient care and professionalism.

About You

As a Veterinary Surgical Technician, you play a critical role in patient outcomes by supporting the surgical team through all phases of care—from surgical preparation and anesthesia induction to recovery and post-operative monitoring. You are proactive, organized, and confident in your technical skills while remaining calm under pressure.

Experience & Skills Requirements:
  • Minimum 2+ years of veterinary technician experience (ER, ICU, or surgery preferred)
  • LVT/CVT/RVT preferred
  • Experience with anesthesia monitoring and surgical assisting
  • Strong understanding of critical care and emergency medicine
  • Comfortable monitoring anesthesia for ASA I–III patients (ASA IV–V preferred)
  • Ability to manage multiple patients simultaneously in a high-volume environment
  • Proficient in IV catheter placement, sample collection, and medication administration
  • Ability to calculate drug dosages and CRIs accurately
  • Experience with advanced monitoring equipment (ECG, SpO2, ETCO2, BP)
  • Familiarity with oxygen therapy, transfusions, and ventilators (preferred)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to recognize subtle changes in patient status
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to remain calm, efficient, and organized under pressure
  • Has experience running diagnostic imaging (MRI/CT/Radiology)
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities (judgment, logic, creativity, conflict resolution)
  • Ethical (diplomatic, courteous, professional)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Able to observe the behavior and condition of animals
  • Strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation and sterile technique
  • Provide superior nursing care or emergency first aid to recovering or injured animals
  • Comfortable with anesthetic patient monitoring of ASA I-III (preferred experience with ASA I-V)
  • Familiarity with the use of ventilators (preferred)
  • Familiar with common surgical procedures, orthopedic surgery and post operative care
  • Able to obtain blood pressure, interpret basic ECG, Sp02, and ETC02 and integrate clinical signs with disease processes to assist doctors in early and appropriate intervention of patient care
  • Collect laboratory samples, such as blood, urine, or tissue, for testing
  • Perform laboratory tests, such as urinalyses and blood counts
  • Comfortable utilizing digital radiography machines to acquire images using proper technique and positioning
  • Comfortable utilizing advanced diagnostic equipment
Role Responsibilities:
  • Assist veterinarians with surgical procedures in accordance with state practice acts
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including pre-anesthetic evaluation and induction
  • Maintain and monitor anesthesia throughout procedures
  • Ensure proper aseptic technique and surgical suite preparation
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and assist with instrumentation and workflow
  • Provide post-operative monitoring and recovery care
  • On-call availability may be required for off days and weekends.
  • Maintain accurate anesthesia and surgical records
  • Provide continuous monitoring and nursing care for hospitalized and critical patients
  • Accurately assess and document TPRs, pain scores, and patient status changes
  • Communicate changes in patient condition promptly to the veterinarian
  • Administer medications, fluids, and treatments as prescribed
  • Maintain accurate and thorough medical records
  • Ensure complete and accurate charge capture for all treatments, procedures, and supplies
  • Communicate effectively with clients regarding patient care and updates when needed
  • Follow all hospital protocols, including safety, controlled substance handling, and documentation standards
  • Mentor and support fellow team members
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and accountable team culture
