Job summary

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is seeking a Veterinary Surgical Assistant - Critical Care Center in Hoover, AL. This full-time role supports veterinarians, LVTs, and staff in a busy shelter clinic.

You will prepare animals for surgery, assist with anesthesia, monitor recovery, and help with adoption health exams. Requires at least 1 year of veterinary assistant experience, strong animal handling skills, and CET certification or eligibility.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 1 year experience as a vet assistant in a veterinary/animal clinic.
• Minimum 1 year experience in animal handling, behavior, and welfare in a shelter.

Responsibilities

• Handle and kennel all animals humanely with proper identification.
• Clean cages/kennels to prevent disease spread.
• Feed animals according to dietary requirements and procedures.
• Assist with medical observations and report issues to staff.
• Maintain accurate records and inventory of supplies.
• Assist in medication and medical treatments as prescribed.
