Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with doctor(s) on duty regarding patient needs and client concerns
  • Restrain patients in a safe, effective, and compassionate manner
  • Phlebotomy, catheter placement (IV, arterial, urinary)
  • Perform routine in-house blood work including blood gas, Procyte, Catalyst, PCV/TS, lactometer, glucometer, PT/PTT, VCM, etc.
  • Calculate and administer medications, injections and Constant Rate Infusions (CRIs)
  • Use proper settings and techniques to obtain diagnostic quality radiographs and fluoroscopy
  • Manage surgical consultations including recording history, running diagnostics and preparing estimates
  • Prepare operating rooms, equipment and materials for surgical procedures
  • Clean, pack/pouch and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment
  • Monitor patients pre/peri and postoperative
  • Observe highest standards for sterility in operating rooms
  • Maintain accurate patient records for surgical procedures including recording vitals, administered drugs and surgical notes
  • Apply and manage bandages
  • Appropriately prepare, handle, and submit specimens to outside laboratories
  • Triage, stabilize, and perform CPR on patients in emergency situations
  • Ability to prioritize patients on an emergency basis
  • Assist with inventory management

Salary Range: $25.00 - $30.00 Hourly

Position Overview

Surgery Technicians are highly skilled professionals who play an indispensable role in advancing patient care and ensuring the success of surgical procedures. As key members of the veterinary healthcare team, they work alongside veterinarians and nursing staff in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment where precision, critical thinking, and compassion make a direct impact on patient outcomes.

From preparing state‑of‑the‑art surgical suites and maintaining the highest standards of aseptic technique to assisting during complex procedures and monitoring patients under anesthesia, surgery technicians are at the heart of every surgical case. Their expertise helps ensure that each patient receives exceptional care before, during, and after surgery.

Skills & Responsibilities

Equipment and Facility Maintenance
  • Maintain cleanliness and readiness of Surgery area and equipment
  • Troubleshoot and use Surgery equipment such as syringe pumps, IV pumps, and monitors
  • Set up, use, troubleshoot, and interpret patient monitoring equipment (includes ECG, ETCO2, SpO2, oscillometric blood pressure, doppler equipment, oxygen chambers, and ventilators)
  • Shut down surgical suites at the end of the day (sweeping, mopping, cleaning surgical instrument tables and patient tables, turning off all equipment used)
  • Maintain cleanliness of facilities and ensure smooth workflow (including cleaning cages, sterilizing equipment, stocking treatment areas, and cleaning examination tables and rooms)
Communication and Documentation
  • Communicate effectively with veterinarians, technicians, and clients regarding patient status
  • Maintain detailed medical records by documenting all treatments, medications, and observations accurately
  • Perform patient discharges including finalizing documentation, entering charges, and explaining instructions (at‑home care, post‑operative care, etc.) and medications to owners
  • Answer phone calls and weave messages related to patient concerns and document communications in ezyVet
  • Participate in shift handovers and interdepartmental transfers to ensure continuity of patient care
  • Enter all client communication in ezyVet
  • Assist with after‑hours transfer cases including rounding, creating estimates, entering charges and medical record management
Physical Stamina
  • Ability to withstand prolonged periods of standing, bending, and kneeling
  • Manual dexterity for handling animals and delicate procedures
  • Requires lifting of patients of varying weights

Schedule
  • Scheduled (3) 12‑hour shifts and/or (4) 10‑hour shifts per week
  • Rotating weekend on‑call schedule

Qualifications
  • Completion of high school or equivalent required
  • Veterinary certification or equivalent experience
