Job summary

The Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio is seeking a Veterinary Research Technician. This dynamic role involves providing veterinary support and technical assistance on clinical and surgical procedures for non-human primates in biomedical research settings.

Job description

Texas Biomed is searching for a Veterinary Research Technician to join our team. This position will provide support and technical assistance on research, clinical, and surgical procedures with non-human primates in Animal Biosafety Level 2 (ABSL2) and Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL3) facilities.

The Role
  • Animal Observations and Clinical Care: performs observations of laboratory non-human primates in single and group housing and provides husbandry care; reviews clinical history, and performs a basic health check; triages and aids in the treatment of animals with wounds and other clinical conditions under the direction of a Veterinarian; uses appropriate standard husbandry procedures (ABSL2 and ABSL3) to clean and sanitize animal areas.
  • Research Support: prepares, induces, maintains, recovers, and documents basic anesthesia events to include IV catheterization and intubation; collects, labels, and distributes biological specimens and tissues from non-human primates; maintains, cleans operates, and reports conditions of equipment; prepares non-human primates for pathologic evaluation and may assist with necropsy; maintains written documentation and subsequent data entry into the animal database.
Our Ideal Candidate
  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma
  • At least 2 years of job specific experience
  • Valid driver's license
  • Possesses a working knowledge of all appropriate SOPs
  • Preferred: AALAS (ALAT, LAT, or LATG) certification. Previous research experience with non-human primates or other laboratory animals is desired.
  • Available to work Monday-Friday, 7am to 4pm with rotating schedule covering weekends and holidays

Other: Work involves strenuous physical activities of various kinds with routine exposure to animals, hazardous substances, potentially dangerous situations, and unpleasant work conditions (e.g. exposure to unpleasant odors or adverse weather conditions). The laboratory environment is managed by stringent safety and health standards and with adherence to protocol, the risk is low.
