Job summary

Texas Biomedical Research Institute is seeking a Veterinary Research Technician to provide primary care and technical support for non-human primates in ABSL2 and ABSL3 facilities. You will perform observations, health checks, and basic anesthesia-related tasks under a veterinarian’s direction.

The role involves collecting specimens, maintaining equipment, and documenting data in the animal database. A minimum two years of relevant experience and a valid driver’s license are required; AALAS

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 2 years of job-specific experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Working knowledge of all appropriate SOPs.
  • Preferred: AALAS certification (ALAT, LAT, or LATG). Previous research with non-human primates or laboratory animals is desired.
  • Available to work Monday-Friday, 7am to 4pm with rotating weekends/holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Observe laboratory non-human primates and provide husbandry care.
  • Review clinical history and perform basic health checks.
  • Triages and aids in treatment under a Veterinarian.
  • Maintain and sanitize animal areas per ABSL2/ABSL3 SOPs.
  • Prepare and document anesthesia events and basic procedures.
  • Collect and label biological specimens for processing.
  • Maintain equipment and document conditions and usage.
  • Prepare non-human primates for pathological evaluation and assist necropsy.

Texas Biomed is searching for a Veterinary Research Technician to join our team. This position will provide support and technical assistance on research, clinical, and surgical procedures with non-human primates in Animal Biosafety Level 2 (ABSL2) and Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL3) facilities.

The Role:
Animal Observations and Clinical Care:
  • Performs observations of laboratory non-human primates in single and group housing and provides husbandry care
  • Reviews clinical history, and performs a basic health check.
  • Triages and aids in the treatment of animals with wounds and other clinical conditions under the direction of a Veterinarian.
  • Uses appropriate standard husbandry procedures (ABSL2 and ABSL3) to clean and sanitize animal areas.
Research Support:
  • Prepares, induces, maintains, recovers, and documents basic anesthesia events to include IV catheterization and intubation.
  • Collects, label, and distributes biological specimens and tissues from non-human primates.
  • Maintains, cleans operates, and report conditions of equipment.
  • Prepares non-human primates for pathologic evaluation and may assist with necropsy.
  • Maintains written documentation and subsequent data entry into the animal database.
Our Ideal Candidate:
  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma
  • At least 2 years of job specific experience
  • Valid driver's license
  • Possesses a working knowledge of all appropriate SOPs

  • Available to work Monday-Friday, 7am to 4pm with rotating schedule covering weekends and holidays

Other: Work involves strenuous physical activities of various kinds with routine exposure to animals, hazardous substances, potentially dangerous situations, and unpleasant work conditions (e.g. exposure to unpleasant odors or adverse weather conditions). The laboratory environment is managed by stringent safety and health standards and with adherence to protocol, the risk is low.
