LOCATION: Lexington, MA/moving to Waltham, MA Q3 2026 (on-site)

POSITION SUMMARY

CBSET is seeking a Veterinary Pathology Specialist/Trainer with expert necropsy experience to conduct, gross examinations, necropsies, expert tissue collections involving precise excision of medical devices and animal tissues for test article related effects and disease diagnosis, with specimen preparation enabling on-site and off-site pathologist review. Expertise in accurate documentation of gross findings, detailed macrophotography for external FDA review, and protocol driven device measurements at necropsy. This specialist position will provide hands-on necropsy experience and also provide department-wide Pathology training with functional team leaders. The work strengthens technical consistency, documentation, and study readiness across Pathology services for research teams and clients.

Salary Range: $90,000 to $120,000/year. (Please note, salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, and certifications.)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical:

• Review protocols and contracts to identify technical aspects of necropsy procedures that are critical to the scientific endpoints of CBSET studies.
• Conduct necropsies with pathologist focusing on technical attributes of the tissue collection and the documentation to enable the highest quality study. Consult with pathologists in advance of conduct to ensure best practices.
• Provide supervision, mentoring, and training for technicians. Oversee staff training including development of training modules, and documentation of specific specialized training events.
• Prepare study materials in advance of complex necropsies to ensure proper documentation of device and disease diagnoses.
• Support gross review, prosection, specimen orientation, trimming coordination, and special collection workflows as qualified.
• Track review status and oversee retrim/recut needs from pathologist requests, as follow-up actions to enable optimal slide production.
• Support chain-of-custody, archive retrieval, sponsor return, and report-supporting documentation.
• Escalate missing materials, inadequate samples, workflow delays, and documentation gaps.

Interpersonal:

• Coordinate with Necropsy, Histology, Digital Pathology, repository/archive, and study teams.

Technical Consultation & Capability Development:

• Provide role-specific input to study planning and workflow improvement; elevate technical or operational questions to the appropriate supervisor or functional leader.
• Provide hands-on necropsy onboarding, training, and competency assessment.
• Coordinate department-wide Pathology training plans, competency tracking, documentation, and follow-up with functional leaders.
• Partner with Necropsy, Histology, Clinical Pathology, Imaging/Assay, and Operation leads to keep training content current with approved procedures and study needs.
• Use training observations, competency results, and recurring deviations to identify practical coaching opportunities and strengthen technical consistency.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

• Advanced pathology, histology, necropsy, biomedical, veterinary, or anatomic pathology experience.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage study materials across multiple workflows.
• Ability to follow SOPs and maintain accurate controlled records.

Preferred:

• Pathologists' Assistant training/certification, veterinary pathology support, CRO/GLP experience, grossing/prosection experience, or digital pathology workflow experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Must be able to perform laboratory procedures, which require talking, hearing, standing or sitting for long periods of time, entering data into a computer, using appropriate instruments, reaching with hands and arms, working in narrow spaces, and wearing safety equipment (Personal Protective Equipment) according to OSHA regulations and company standards.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Ability to consistently lift and move at least 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Preclinical Pathology laboratories and related study-support areas.
• Animal facility and laboratories with moderate noise possible and exposure to hazardous/noxious devices (e.g., needles, scalpel blades, etc.) and chemicals (e.g., anesthetic gases, formalin, alcohols, xylenes, etc.).
• General office working conditions, with generally quiet noise conditions.

COMMENTS:

• May require occasional duties on weekends and/or holidays.
