Job summary

The Animal Hospital At Murdoch University is seeking a veterinary nurse to deliver high-quality care across soft tissue, oncologic, orthopaedic and neurosurgical services. You will join a team of nurses in a busy referral setting, supporting clinicians in examinations, procedures and post-operative care.

The role is a fixed-term position (12 months), full-time or part-time up to 37.5 hours per week, with a salary around AU$74,809–AU$79,802 pro rata and superannuation benefits, plus

  • Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or equivalent is required.
  • Ability to handle and restrain small animals with confidence.
  • Strong knowledge of diagnostic and surgical equipment and aseptic techniques.
  • Experience with various surgical procedures in a general practice setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide all aspects of veterinary nursing care per the Vet Nurses Act and WA regulations.
  • Comply with university policies and relevant veterinary acts and regulations.
  • Coordinate equipment availability with clinical areas and support teams.
  • Assist clinicians with examinations, workups, procedures and surgeries.

About The Team

The small animal surgery referral service offers specialty services in both soft tissue and oncologic surgery, and orthopaedic and neurosurgery. Our full range of facilities and state of the art surgical equipment, coupled with integrated support from specialist level care in anaesthesia, 24h intensive care, internal medicine, advanced diagnostic imaging and excellent nursing standards enable us to manage the most complex surgical challenges and ensure that our patients receive a very high standard of care across all aspects of surgical management. You would be joining a team of 7 veterinary nurses; the service is open to clientele 08:00 -18:00 Weekdays.

Your New Role!

The key purpose of this role is to provide high quality veterinary nursing care to animals in The Animal Hospital At Murdoch University.

Your Key responsibilities
  • Provide all aspects of veterinary nursing care as per the Certificate IV of Veterinary Nursing and the Prescribed Duties of Veterinary Nurses within the Vet Surgeons Act of WA.
  • Comply with University and TAHMU policies, procedures and protocols. Comply with The Veterinary Surgeons' Act of WA and other veterinary industry related Acts and Regulations.
  • Liaise with clinical areas within the hospital to coordinate daily availability of equipment and technical support.
  • Assist clinicians with examinations, workups, procedures, treatments and surgeries.

What you’ll bring to the role:
  • Completion of a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or equivalent, or completion of a relevant Veterinary Nursing Diploma level qualification registrable in Western Australia.
  • Demonstrated confidence and skill when handling and restraining small animals.
  • Excellent knowledge of diagnostic and surgical equipment as well as sterilising and aseptic techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience and exposure to various surgical procedures and patient care in a general practice setting.
  • Excellent organisational, time and workload management skills, including the ability to prioritise workload to meet strict deadlines.
  • Highly effective communication, customer service and interpersonal skills, and the demonstrated ability to interact constructively and collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organisation.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative, assume responsibility for tasks and projects and to resolve problems.
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as fitting seamlessly into a team environment.
  • A strong interest in developing skills within a specialised area.
