Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services is seeking a Laboratory & Pharmacy Technician to support in-house diagnostics, specimen processing, and pharmacy operations in a fast-paced specialty and emergency hospital.

The role emphasizes accuracy, organization, and teamwork as you collaborate with doctors, technicians, and clients to ensure timely results and safe medication management for our patients.

Qualifications

• Detail-oriented and highly organized; able to multitask in a fast-paced veterinary setting.
• Experience with in-house laboratory testing and pharmacy operations preferred.
• Ability to document results accurately and communicate with doctors and clients.

Responsibilities

• Perform in-house diagnostic testing (CBCs, chemistries, urinalysis, coagulation, blood typing, crossmatching, SNAP, PCV/TS).
• Prepare, package, label, and submit specimens to reference labs.
• Document results and enter charges in the management system.
• Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment; manage inventory.
• Process prescription requests and dispense medications.
• Coordinate prescriptions with outside pharmacies as needed.
• Communicate results and prescription questions with veterinarians and clients.
• Ensure compliance with hospital protocols and safety standards.
• Assist with training team members and maintaining a collaborative environment.

Laboratory & Pharmacy Technician

Position Overview

The Laboratory & Pharmacy Technician plays a vital role in supporting patient care through accurate laboratory diagnostics and efficient pharmacy operations. This position is responsible for performing in-house laboratory testing, maintaining laboratory and pharmacy equipment and inventory, processing prescriptions, and ensuring timely communication with doctors, technicians, and clients. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and thrives in a fast-paced specialty and emergency veterinary environment.

Essential Responsibilities

• Perform in-house diagnostic testing, including CBCs, serum chemistries, urinalysis, coagulation testing, blood typing, crossmatching, SNAP testing, PCV/TS, and other laboratory procedures.
• Prepare, package, label, and submit specimens for reference laboratory testing.
• Accurately document laboratory results and enter charges into the practice management system.
• Maintain, clean, calibrate, troubleshoot, and monitor laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance.
• Manage laboratory and pharmacy inventory, ensuring adequate supplies are available at all times.
• Process prescription requests received by phone, email, fax, or directly from the medical team.
• Review medical records and doctor instructions to accurately prepare and dispense medications.
• Coordinate prescription orders with outside pharmacies as needed.
• Communicate effectively with veterinarians, technicians, clients, and referral partners regarding laboratory results, prescription questions, and refill requests.
• Monitor laboratory and pharmacy email inboxes and respond promptly to requests.
• Maintain compliance with hospital protocols, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Assist with training team members on laboratory and pharmacy procedures.
• Contribute to a clean, organized, and collaborative work environment.

Qualifications

• Certified Veterinary Technician (LVT/CVT/RVT) preferred; equivalent veterinary experience considered.
• Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a veterinary hospital, specialty practice, or diagnostic laboratory preferred.
• Working knowledge of veterinary laboratory procedures and common veterinary medications.
• Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and multitasking skills.
• Proficient with veterinary practice management software and computer systems.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to remain calm, efficient, and accurate in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
• Ability to stand, bend, lift, and perform the physical demands of a veterinary hospital setting.
