Job summary

Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services (BSVESS) is seeking an ER/ICU Veterinary Technician to deliver compassionate nursing care for critical patients. The role involves a broad set of technical duties, anesthesia support, and an emphasis on teamwork within a busy hospital setting.

Ideal candidates have 2+ years in small animal emergency medicine, strong medical math skills, and excellent communication.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years’ professional experience in a small animal clinical setting as a technician.
  • State license to practice as a veterinary technician preferred.
  • Superior technical knowledge and skills.
  • Proficient in medical math calculations (drugs, CRIs, conversions).
  • Excellent communication skills with clients and team members.
  • Proficient time management, problem solving, multitasking.
  • Must lift and restrain pets up to 40 pounds and stay on feet during shifts.
  • Ability to adapt to changes and manage stress calmly.
  • Team player with patience and positive attitude.
  • Detail oriented to meet high-quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver compassionate nursing care with a range of skills including sampling, catheterization, venipuncture, radiography, and in-patient care for critical patients.
  • Serve as a healthcare team member to ensure care for emergencies and hospital patients.
  • Answer client questions, address concerns, and show empathy in stressful moments.
  • Assist with procedures and surgeries, including anesthesia induction and monitoring, and post-operative care.
  • Obtain health histories and document accurately in EMR.
  • Mentor and support fellow team members while advancing knowledge and skills.
  • Continuously enhance knowledge and skills to provide high-quality medicine.

ER/ICU Veterinary Technician

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Deliver exceptional, compassionate nursing care to patients utilizing a variety of technical skills, including diagnostic sample collection, catheter placement, venipuncture, radiography, emergency triage, and in-patient care for critical patients, including exemplary comfort care
  • Be a crucial member of the healthcare team to ensure exceptional veterinary care for patients experiencing medical emergencies as well as those patients admitted to the hospital
  • Advocate for patients, and clients, answer client’s questions and address their concerns; readily demonstrate empathy for clients in stressful and emotionally driven moments
  • Assist with patient procedures and surgeries, including anesthetic induction and monitoring, pre and post operative patient care, surgical suite, instrument, and equipment care
  • Obtain health history from clients and ensure documentation is accurate and complete within the electronic medical record
  • Willingness to guide, mentor, and support fellow team members
  • Constantly advance your knowledgebase and skill set
Skills and Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years’ professional experience in small animal clinical setting as a technician
  • State license to practice as a veterinary technician preferred
  • Superior technical knowledge and skills
  • Proficient in medical math calculations (drugs, constant rate infusions, conversions, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills with clients and team members
  • Proficient time management, ability to problem solve, learn, and handle multiple tasks
  • Enthusiastic team player with a patient, and positive professional attitude
  • Must be able to lift and restrain pets of at least 40 pounds, and work on feet most of the day
  • Must have the ability to adjust to changes in the environment and able to handle stress in a calm manner
  • Must be a team player, have patience and maintain a positive attitude
  • Must be able to anticipate patient needs and be detail oriented due to the high level of quality medicine

    • Non-credentialed Techs: $20 to $29
    • Credentialed Techs: $22 to $31
