University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) seeks a Veterinary Facility Supervisor for its Veterinary Resources team. Under the Veterinary Facility Manager, you will manage day-to-day operations of a laboratory animal facility and ensure compliance with federal animal care regulations.

You will supervise husbandry staff, maintain inventory, and oversee animal welfare across ABLS environments from level 1 to 3, emphasizing safety, SOP adherence, and collaboration with researchers.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required with relevant experience in animal care.
  • 3 years in an animal husbandry environment, with at least 2 years in a laboratory animal facility supporting research.
  • ALAAS/related certification preferred or achievable.
  • Must be able to work in ABLS environments (level 1–3) and follow SOPs.

Responsibilities

  • Determine work priorities, plans, and schedules for animal care staff.
  • Advise and communicate with research staff on experimental needs and facility requirements.
  • Order feed, bedding and supplies and maintain inventory.
  • Supervise animal care and SOPs, including housing, feeding, and hygiene.
  • Assist in regulatory submissions with IACUC and other agencies.

University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB)'s Veterinary Resourcesis seeking a Veterinary Facility Supervisor to join its team.Under general supervision of the Veterinary Facility Manager, theVeterinary Facility Supervisor helps manage the day-to-dayactivities of a laboratory animal facility. This position overseesthe care and treatment of animals to ensure compliance with federalrules and regulations of animal care and appropriateness ofresearch conducted. This position may be used in one or all typesof Animal Biosafety Laboratories (ABLS) ranging from level 1 to 3environments.

UMB is a public university and constituent institution of theUniversity System of Maryland. All employees are expected to workprimarily physically within the State of Maryland.

Primary Duties
  • Determine work priorities, plans, and schedules; assign andreview work; conduct hands– on training of animal carepersonnel.
  • Advise, assist, and communicate with research staff regardinganimal experimental needs; implement or oversee implementation ofprocedure or equipment requirements to ensure that research needsare met.
  • Order feed, bedding and supplies and maintain sufficientinventory.
  • Assist in maintaining the animal facility and cage wash area tomeet the standards of the Animal Welfare Act, the Guide for theCare and Use of Laboratory animals, and other state, federal andlocal animal welfare laws and regulations.
  • Provide husbandry supervision defined by standard operatingprocedures (SOP), such as ensuring appropriate feeding and wateringof animals, cleaning and changing cages, preparing special dietsand monitoring proper temperature, light, and humidity levels.Follow SOPs related to biosecurity and disease prevention handlingin the care of the animals, facility, and staff.
  • Recommend, implement, and maintain policies, procedures andplanning the direction of the daily operations of the animalfacilities.
  • Ensure caging and housing materials meet the specific housingrequirements for each species. Ensure enclosure and bedding changesare performed per defined frequency and compliance in transportinganimals with specified physical restraints, handling, andtransportation requirements.
  • Supervise the documentation and record keeping of animal andnon-animal room logs and proper clinical documentation.
  • Oversee the receipt of animals, feeding/bedding and supplies.Ensure animals are received properly in online management portal,cage cards are printed, cage cards are assigned to correct animalsand delivered to appropriate facility/rooms.
  • Assist in the oversight of the maintenance of the facility andanimal care. Report abnormal environmental parameters withinfacility to management and appropriate physical plant teams.
  • Assist in facility security (systems and breach preventionstrategies planning and enforcement).
  • Perform rounds throughout the facility and animal rooms toensure all assigned tasks are completed.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of documentationsubmission for Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)and other regulatory agencies, such as USDA, PHS, FDA, andGLP.
  • Foster relationships between various stake holders in theAnimal Care and Use program.

Qualifications :

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: Three (3) years in animal husbandry environmentwith at least two (2) years in a laboratory animal facilitysupporting a research project.

Other: Certification by the American Association forLaboratory Animal Science (AALAS) as a Laboratory Animal Technician(LAT) preferred.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional relatedexperience and formal education in which one has gained theknowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance ofthe work of the job class may be substituted for the education orexperience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 collegecredits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General knowledge of the appropriate handling of all species oflaboratory animals. Ability to train and supervise facility andanimal staff in proper animal care. Ability to follow standardoperating procedures; to wear and work in personal protectiveequipment; to operate computers and other standard officeequipment; to supervise and train personnel; to communicateeffectively both orally and in writing. Ability to operate standardlaboratory animal equipment including scales, autoclaves, pressurewashers, cage washers, steam cleaners, etc.; to lift bags of feedand bedding; to follow standard operating procedures; to move heavystainless-steel racks, clean cages, etc. Ability for scheduleflexibility to provide off hour responses to emergency husbandryissues, facility problems, and alarms as needed.

Conditions of Employment

Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medicalinquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability toperform the job. Biosafety Laboratory Level 3 have additionalguidelines specific to working in BLS3 environments requiring thereceipt of BLS3 training, ability to demonstrate proficiency inBLS3 practice and techniques, and participate in medicalsurveillance. Biosafety Laboratories Level 3 (BLS3) requiressuccessful completion of Department of Justice security clearancefor work with Select Agents and Toxins, as required by Federalregulation. May be required to have current tetanus and/ordiphtheria shots. Current measles titer and/or vaccine and TBtesting may be required.

Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates arenot eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit(Union).

Hiring Range:

$59,000 - $70,000, commensurate with educationand experience.
